Audit Committee meeting Tuesday

The Fredonia Board of Education will have an Audit Committee meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. in the High School Library.

School plans meet and greet

Dunkirk High School will be hosting a meet and greet event on Friday afternoon. Parents, relatives and community members are welcome to attend the event from 2 to 4 p.m. Besides high school staff members, community agencies also will be on hand. There also will be food and beverages for those who attend.

Blood screening set for Sept. 13

The 30th annual Rotary Blood Screening program, with the assistance of Brooks Memorial Hospital, will be from 6:30 to 9:20 a.m. Sept. 13 in the Fredonia High School. The clinical blood test, including the colon-rectal take home test kit and the T4 Thyroxine or thyroid test will be $45. A PSA test is an additional $25.

There also are free blood pressure screenings and test results are sent to your personal physician within one week.

Proceeds from the program stay in the Fredonia and Dunkirk communities. To register, call 363-3917.

Silver Creek Retired Teachers’ luncheon Wednesday

The Silver Creek Retired Teachers’ annual luncheon will be held at the White Inn in Fredonia Wednesday at noon. For reservations or information, contact either Sue Lagana at 679-1466 or Judy Mowery at 672-2766. The reservation deadline is Monday.

Valley Historical Society meets Tuesday

The next regular meeting of the Valley Historical Society will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Museum at the corner of Main and Lester streets in Sinclairville.

Members will be finalizing plans for the 15th Annual History Fair Sept. 13, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Sinclairville.

Street dance today and Sunday

The First Ward Falcon Club will hold its annual street dance today and Sunday at 341-343 Lake Shore Dr. E. in Dunkirk. Saturday’s entertainment is “Black Diamond,” from 7 to 11 p.m.

Sunday features a chicken barbecue. Pre-sale tickets are $8.50, or dinners can be purchased for $9 at the door. The Diva Show performs on Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m.

Murray Hose Co. #4 moves review

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the Murray Hose Co. #4 monthly meeting will be held the second Monday of the month, Sept. 8, at 104 West Doughty Street, Dunkirk, at 7 p.m. The group will review the picnic, where all had a good time.

Forestville Republican caucus date changed

The Forestville village Republican Caucus has been rescheduled from Sept. 4 to Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building on Chestnut Street, Forestville.

Silver Creek brush pickup delayed

Silver Creek Mayor Nick Piccolo would like to notify village residents that next week’s brush pickup will be delayed until Thursday or Friday due to work blacktopping the Christy and Jaekle streets area. The village apologizes for any inconvenience.

City brush pickup schedule

The City of Dunkirk Public Works Department announces that brush pickup will begin on Tuesday in District A. District B will be picked up the week of Sept. 8, District C will be picked up the week of Sept. 15 and District D will be picked up the week of Sept. 22.

Brush must be at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the Monday of the respective collection week, but no earlier than the previous Saturday. City crews will collect each area only once. Brush placed at the curb after the crews pass by will not be collected and will be ticketed as a violation of the City Code and property owners will be prosecuted.

Brush should be bundled with string or twine no more than 4 feet long, diameter of no more than 18 inches and shall weigh no more than 65 pounds. Bundles should be placed between the sidewalk and curb but should not be placed near any posts, trees, water or sewer boxes, etc. which could be damaged during removal operations. Brush placed on city property other than the area fronting the respective residential property will be ticketed.

City residents may also drop brush at the Public Works facility on Lucas Avenue. Please refer to the 2014 Curbside Collection Schedule for further information.

Dunkirk Town Board workshop and special meeting scheduled

The Dunkirk Town Board will hold a workshop and special meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 at the Town Hall, 4737 Willow Road. The purpose of the workshop is to begin budget review and conduct any other lawful business to come before the town board.

ZZ Top cancels

performance

ZZ Top announced the cancellation of performances for the next few weeks due to longtime co-vocalist and guitarist Dusty Hill’s injury. Hill slipped and fell on his hip Tuesday night on his tour bus, sustaining an injury that has required “immediate attention.”

Among the canceled performances is the outdoor concert at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino today at 7 p.m.

The show will continue on with Jeff Beck, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who was ranked No. 5 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of all-time greatest guitarists. Opening act, Tyler Bryant, will also perform. Bryant, 23, has dazzled many of the music industry’s greats since his early teenage years, touring with or opening for acts such as Aerosmith, Heart, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many others. The show will start at 7 p.m. as originally planned.

Ticket holders will be offered several options for refunds. Concert-goers who wish to see Jeff Beck in concert may retain their ticket stub and receive a discount, in the amount of 50 percent of the purchase price of the ticket, for a future concert at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, subject to availability. Full refunds will be available for those who no longer wish to attend the show.

Guests seeking refunds for tickets purchased at a Seneca Casino retail outlet may return them to the Logo Shop or the TEN Store at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino or their specific point-of-purchase location. Refunds for tickets purchased through Ticketmaster may be returned to any Ticketmaster location, online at Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 800-745-3000.

Audubon Society First Friday Lunch Bunch will be held Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Audubon Center and Sanctuary, 1600 Riverside Rd., Jamestown.

Terry LeBaron and Jennifer Schlick present “A Bird in the Hand,” a program about bird-related research. There may be an opportunity to demonstrate bird ID skills and win some prizes.

Following the program, coffee and tea will be provided for a BYO brown bag lunch.

Valley Historical Society meets Tuesday

Fredonia Police release July report

The Fredonia Police Department has released its monthly report for July.

A total of 610 incidents were reported. Police responded to 15 accidents, documented 39 arrests, gave out 23 vehicle and traffic charges and issued 10 parking tickets.

Significant incident quantities included: three aggravated harassment reports, three burglaries past tense, 12 larcenies, one narcotics investigation, two suicides/attempted suicides, one gunshot complaint and one death investigation.

Fredonia Fire Dept. releases July report

The Fredonia Fire Department has released its run report for July.

There were a total of 156 calls that month, which breaks down into 124 rescue and EMS calls, 13 false alarms, 10 good intent calls, four fires, three service calls and two hazardous conditions without fires.

The village of Fredonia had 100 of the 156 calls, with 38 other calls being in the town of Pomfret outside village limits, seven on the New York state Thruway, six mutual aid calls and five at SUNY Fredonia.

Cassadaga Labor Day Weekend events planned

On Saturday, the Labor Day weekend grand parade will be held in Cassadaga at 4 p.m. along Maple Avenue in the village, beginning at Frisbee Road and ending at the Cassadaga Firehall on Mill Street.

Deputy Mayor Jeff Frick will be the MC for the parade.

The Cassadaga American Legion will hold a clam, corn and sausage roast at the Legion hall on Maple Avenue from 1 to 6 p.m. Following the parade, the Lakes Association will hold its Ducky Derby at the Maple Avenue and Mill Street lake outlet. Hot dogs and pop will be served at the firehall after the parade. On Sunday, the annual boat parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Dale Drive boat launch and conclude at the Cassadaga Beach, where there will be a steel band concert by the Dunkirk Marauders, led by conductor Cindy Flaherty at 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend all events.

Leadership network award to be televised

Chautauqua Leadership Network awarded the “Leader of the Year” award to Gary R. Lynn, CEO of Lynn Development Group at a dinner honoring him earlier this summer. The event was held at the St. Susan’s Center in Jamestown. Presentations were made by Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi and Chautauqua County executive Vince Horrigan. Representatives were present for Senator Cathy Young and Assemblyman Andrew Goodell.

The Honorable Steve Cass, a close friend of Lynn, recounted several stories about Gary.

The ceremony will be presented on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. beginning Saturday with the last airing on Sept. 5.

Jim Brady to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

James Brady, CPA will be the next person interviewed on “Chautauqua People.”

The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Sept. 5.

Brady currently serves as a member of the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees and is Chairman of its Development Council. He is a partner in Deloitte, an international accounting and management-consulting firm. He has held overseas assignments in both Russia and India. He is currently the U.S. Head, Government Affairs at Deloitte and is based in Washington, D.C. He will be interviewed by Chautauqua People Producer John Viehe.

Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Cathy Young as the guest on Saturday. Young is the New York State Senator for the 57th district. The show will be hosted by Doc Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. The guest is subject to change.

Cooking up a classic French dish at Dunkirk Farmers Market

Today on Ruggles Street at the Dunkirk Senior Center, 45 Cliffstar Court, the Gleaning Project of the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry will host a cooking and nutrition workshop to showcase local, in-season fruits and vegetables in the classical French dish of ratatouille. Hannah Farley, Project Coordinator, will be at the Dunkirk Farmers’ Market from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. handing out samples and demonstrating to visitors how to cook up a French dinner using local ingredients.

Farmers accept all NYS Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks at the Dunkirk Farmers Market.

This program is funded by the NYS Department of Health and is a United Way Community Partner.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.64/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.43/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 14.6 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 13.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

Due to a resignation, Pine Valley Central School has a vacancy on its board of education. ‘Pocket Full

of Dreams’

performance Saturday

The final week of the annual Playground Drama Day Camp at SUNY Fredonia ends Saturday and includes a performance of “Pocket Full of Dreams,” a world-premiere children’s musical. The 3:30 p.m. performance will be held in the Marvel Theatre in the Rockefeller Arts Center and will feature child actors.

All tickets can be purchased for $7 each from the Central Ticket Office by calling 673-3501, online at www.fredonia.edu/tickets, or on the day of the show in the Marvel Theatre Lobby beginning at 2:30 p.m. There is a $2 per order processing fee for phone and Internet orders. Forestville needs volunteer

The Forestville Village Board is searching for a community volunteer to serve on the task force created when the village received a loan from the county. The task force will seek a study to examine the sustainability of village government in different capacities in the future. Interested parties can send a letter to the village clerk’s office.

Civil War Talk at Cattaraugus County Museum Thursday

The Cattaraugus County Museum’s summer-long Civil War Events series if drawing to a close. Its last evening event will take place Thursday when Craig Senfield will give a talk titled “President-Elect Lincoln,” focusing on the period between Lincoln’s election and his taking office.

Senfield is knowledgeable on all things pertaining to the Civil War, having been involved with the local Civil War Roundtable for many years. He is also an avid collector of Civil War artifacts, having loaned items to the County Museum for exhibits on a number of occasions. It will be a very interesting evening and will be free and open to the public.

Railroad crews making repairs next week

Railroad crews will make repairs to the Chautauqua County Route 12 (Niobe Road) Western New York and Pennsylvania railroad crossing located at Niobe in the Town of Harmony. Chautauqua County Route 12 will be closed to all traffic at the Western New York and Pennsylvania railroad crossing at Niobe beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday until 5 p.m. on Thursday. A detour will be posted.

Gas price falls

Average retail gasoline prices in New York have fallen 4.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.70/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 6,118 gas outlets in New York. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.45/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in New York during the past week, prices Sunday were 12.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 16.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 8.5 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Moose and the Bulletproof Blues Band to make MOP debut tonight

Tonight’s concert on the pier, sponsored by the Columbus Club, will feature Ellard James “Moose” Boles, a blues performer who was a featured writer and performer with the late Lou Reed.

Boles, a veteran blues singer and song-writer has also played with Gregg Allman and now is a regular featured entertainer in Key West, Florida.

He will perform several numbers with three local musicians who play in the band Imortal from Silver Creek. Imortal includes the Bogosian brothers, Alex and Zak, as well as Tevor Cole on drums. They have performed at Willowfest and opened for Dio, a heavy metal band.

All teens, the members of Imortal have been working on several blues tunes to back Moose.

The set list will include traditional numbers from Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Johnny Lang.

Moose is no stranger to the western New York music scene. He played with the band “Freeze” in the 1970s before connecting with Allman and then Reed. Freeze was a popular draw at Mulligan’s Beach Club and Mickey Rats.

“I am happy to be touring up north and visiting western New York again,” said Moose.

He promised a story or two about his travels and tours in addition to an evening of popular blues/rock music.

Again, food will be available as well as a beer tent.

Farmers’ Market in South Dayton Saturday

On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Farmers’ Market will be held on the South Dayton Village Square. There will be fresh produce from the farm, Amish baked goods, donuts, jams, pickles, homemade aprons, potholders, candles, and Oakes Traveling Mercantile with an assortment of bulk foods including dips, flours, pie fillings.

A picnic for all Leon residents will be held on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the firehall.

Hanover Republican Club picnic Sunday

The Town of Hanover Republican Club’s annual picnic will be held on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Hanover Bicentennial Park on King Road (just west of Hanover Road.)

Many elected officials and candidates for the November election will be in attendance.

Barbecued hamburgers, corn on the cob, salads, desserts and refreshments will be available, along with a silent auction and 50-50 drawing.

As announced in the OBSERVER’s Community Notebook on Tuesday, residents in the area radiating from Benton Street and Roberts Road experienced low water pressure that day while Millennium Parkway contractors replaced a broken 20-inch main valve to return the Fourth Ward and Industrial Park system to full capacity and fire protection.

During the work, hydrants were flowed by city water maintenance workers to monitor pressure and line function – as pictured on page A3 of Wednesday’s OBSERVER. Dunkirk DPW thanks residents for their patience, and for their curiosity, as their area’s water system was briefly slowed down so it could be repaired to full service.

Pomfret Town Hall closed Friday

The Pomfret Town Hall building will be closed Friday in order to accommodate traffic for the Fredonia Farm Festival.

Community Health and Information Resource Fair scheduled rain or shine for Saturday

The Community Health and Information Resource Fair is scheduled rain or shine for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Graf Building parking lot at the corner of 3rd St. and Central Ave in Dunkirk. Free health and wellness screenings will be available throughout the day. There will be a martial arts demo team at 2 p.m. The event also features food, music, giveaways, and education about diet and nutrition, self breast awareness, and HIV.

Evening in the Garden to Highlight Pizza Gardening

The Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program of Chautauqua County will highlight the “fruits” of the Pizza Garden and invite the public to attend a delectable tasting of pizzas that feature the vegetables and herbs that have been grown in the demonstration garden as well as homemade cheeses from the Master Food Preservers at their next Evening in the Garden program that will start at 6 p.m. today at the Frank Bratt Ag Center Demonstration Garden.

In addition to the pizza tasting, there will be a garden tour, as well as gardening demonstrations. The program will be held rain or shine. In the case of rain, it will be inside the Ag Center in the large meeting room.

All are welcome to attend and the event is free of charge. The Frank Bratt Ag Center is located at 3542 Turner Road in Jamestown.

There will be a yard sale and bake sale fundraiser to benefit Denise Sealander on Saturday at American Legion Post 59, 156 E. Main St., Fredonia from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Items are needed for the event and can be dropped off at the club through Thursday from 3 to 10 p.m. No clothing or shoes.

The bake sale will be from 9 a.m. until sold out. Baked goods are also needed and can be dropped off Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m. CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare, construction and the security industries, as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse. CJCA will soon offer a security and protective services program. CJCA will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted. Members of the Southwestern NY American Red Cross Disaster Team responded to provide disaster relief following a fire on West Main Street in Dunkirk Saturday morning.

Disaster Team member Mary Walker responded to provide initial disaster assistance for a family of four. Temporary housing, clothing, and meals are services typically offered to address emergency needs. The local Red Cross chapter will continue working with the individuals and their recovery process if additional services or referrals are necessary.

Rev. Dr. Robert Franklin to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

The Rev. Dr. Robert Franklin will be the next person interviewed on Chautauqua People.

The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Aug. 29.

Dr. Franklin is a native of Chicago and became Director of the Department of Religion at Chautauqua Institution in January 2014 where he also serves as pastor to the Chautauqua Congregation. He is a past-president of Morehouse College in Atlanta and past-professor at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester. He most recently served as a researcher at Stanford University working with the papers of Dr. Martin Luther King and currently holds a secondary appointment teaching ethics at Emory University in Atlanta during the academic year.

Dr. Franklin will be interviewed by Chautauqua Peo-ple producer John Viehe.

Local officials discuss water issues

Comments made by two key government officials during a recent General Membership Meeting of Chautauqua Property Owners’ Association on Aug. 9 concerning water issues will be aired on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday until Aug. 29.

Tom Cherry (superinten-dent, Chautauqua Utility District) discussed blue-green algae in Lake Chautauqua and its control. He made additional comments about proposed upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant and answered questions about other wastewater processes.

Don Emhardt (super-visor, town of Chautauqua) answered questions about The Chautauqua Lake and Watershed Alliance. He also reported about upgrades to various sewer systems around the shore of Lake Chautauqua.

Cultural series talk at Catt. County Museum

The Cattaraugus County Museum’s series of cultural talks concludes Saturday with a talk on Iroquois beadwork by Dolores Elliott, an expert on Iroquois beadwork who has authored five books on this topic.

Horrigan to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise

Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Vince Horrigan as the guest Saturday. Horrigan is the Chautauqua County Executive. The show will be hosted by Doc Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. Clinger to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

William Clinger will be the next person to be featured on Chautauqua People.

The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Aug. 22.

Clinger is a native of Warren, Pa., and served nine terms as a congressman from northwest Penn-sylvania rising through the Republican Party ranks to committee chairmanship. He is best known as co-author of the Clinger-Cohen act which reformed the federal government’s acquisition process. A lifelong Chautauquan, he joined the Institution’s Board of Trustees and served as its chairman during which time the board selected the institution’s current president (Tom Becker), reformed the alcohol policy and initiated a capital improvement service charge.

Clinger will be interviewed by Chautauqua People Producer John Viehe.

The first Forestville Community Family Picnic will be held Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Forestville American Legion on Cedar Street. Collins road to be closed through fall

A portion of Lenox Road in the town of Collins will be closed into October. The road will be closed from Brown Street to Jennings Road through about Oct. 17, weather permitting. Crews are replacing a culvert over a tributary to Clear Creek. A detour is posted.

Milling and paving Route 5 will start today in Dunkirk

The New York State Department of Transporta-tion said highway milling and paving will begin today on Route 5 (Lake Shore Drive) in the city of Dun-kirk. Daily lane closures will occur from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. in both directions. This project is expected to last for four days, but could be delayed in the event of inclement weather.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

Middle Road to be closed Wednesday

The city of Dunkirk Public Works Department has been informed Middle Road from Lake Shore Drive to the tracks will be closed for milling Wednesday. Detours will be posted with alternate routes.

City assessment roll available for review

The city of Dunkirk assessment roll has been completed by Assessor Tom Mleczko and is available for review in the city clerk’s office during normal business hours. The roll will remain on file for 10 years.

Fundraiser includes contest on Aug. 17

As part of an Aug. 17 benefit for Mikey Edwards, a 26-year-old Dunkirk resident who is battling Stage 4 colon cancer, the Amazing Bar Crawl Race will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the Dunkirk Exempts Firemens Club on Central Avenue.

Teams may consist of up to four members at $20 per member, which includes a meal after the event.

The event will consist of visiting seven bars/clubs to answer a trivia question or riddle about the establishment being visited. Correct answers are worth 250 points and bonus points will be awarded for each team member who has a beverage at each place. Bonus points will also be awarded for arriving back at the Exempts club prior to 2 p.m.

Joining the Exempts Club in the Amazing Bar Crawl Race will be American Legion Post 62, The Fillmore, Bart’s Cove, Spike Dailey’s, The Clarion Hotel and Rookies on the Lake.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Concert at two library branches Friday

Every August, the National Association of Community Health Centers sponsors National Health Center Week to inform the American public, state and federal policymakers and the media about America’s over 1,200 community health centers. These centers now serve as the “family doctor” for over 20 million people. National Health Center Week always seeks to highlight the commitment and passion of the tens of thousands of health center staff and board members who make it possible for health centers to be “healthcare homes” in over 9,000 communities.

The community is welcome to come visit with various human service agencies, health insurance carriers, meet the staff and for a tour of the center. Look for various fun-filled activities throughout the day, as well as a “backpacks and school supplies” giveaway. The event will conclude with a Family Movie Night to begin at dusk.

County Charter and Administrative Code Review Commission meets Wednesday

The Chautauqua County Charter and Administrative Code Review Commission has been convened as required every 10 years by the County Charter. The commission held its organizational meeting on July 9 and its next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Room 331 of the Gerace Office Building, 3 N. Erie St., in Mayville.

The commission is inviting written comments and suggestions from local government officials and the general public regarding the current charter and administrative code, including potential amendments.

Chautauqua County Antique Equipment Association annual show this weekend

The Chautauqua County Antique Equipment Association will hold its 40th annual show of antique engines, farm tractors, autos, models, and other mechanical equipment Friday, Saturday and Sunday on its grounds on Cemetery Road, Stockton.

Show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For a $5 donation, the public can see the equipment in operation and on parade.

There is a flea market, ample free parking, food, and permanent restrooms all on the grounds. There are demonstrations and events throughout the day, as well as special events at posted times.

Children under 14 are admitted free. Senior citizen admission on Friday is $3.

Dunkirk Mayor Anthony J. Dolce has proclaimed this week as National Health Center Week in the city, saying there are countless reasons to celebrate America’s health centers.

Ellicottville Historical Society sets meeting topic

The Ellicottville Histori-cal Society will meet on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ellicottville Memorial Library.

The speaker for the evening will be Ollie Hazard. He will be speaking on “My grandfather’s farm in Napoli and interesting stories of my family’s past.”

Silver Creek Volunteer Fire Department calls

The Silver Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to a total of 42 calls in July. These calls included one accident, 11 emergency and 12 fire calls in the village.

The department responded to 15 emergency calls in the town of Hanover and one other call and two mutual aid calls in the town of Sheridan.

DFD July run report

The city of Dunkirk Fire Department went on 188 runs in July, according to Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom. Included were 142 emergency medical service runs resulting in 50 billed transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. The department also responded to 22 still alarms, 20 box alarms and four mutual aid calls.

The Dunkirk Lakefront 5KWalk/Run will begin and end Saturday at the Dunkirk Clarion Hotel, 30 Lake Shore Drive East. This 5K starts at 9 a.m. and runs along the shores of Lake Erie. Fees are as follows: for the run: $20 pre-registration, $25 race day registration. For the walk: $10 registration, free for under 14 with a registered adult. Age groups are 14 & under, 15 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69, 70 to 79 and 80 & above. Food and drinks will be provided to all registered runners and walkers. Guests may enjoy the festivities and food for $4 for adults and $2 for children. Peterson to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

Gregory L. Peterson will be interviewed on the next edition of “Chautauqua People.” The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on Aug. 15.

A native of Jamestown, Peterson is a partner in the law firm of Philips Lytle, with offices in Jamestown, Buffalo and Rochester. He is a co-founder and past president of the Robert H. Jackson Center in James-town and the recipient of several community service awards.

Peterson will be interviewed by Ira Cooperman.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television (channel 21.4) that has been recently autoscanned.

Thomas to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise

“Chautauqua Sunrise” will feature Mark Thomas as the guest Saturday. Thomas is with the New York State Parks and Historical Sites Office. The show will be hosted by Doc Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. The guest is subject to change.

Chautauqua Sunrise is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chau-tauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forestville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19. The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville. ‘Cooking with Nick’ to air on Access Channel 5

Nick Rizzo, a local chef from Mayville, returns this week with a show is entitled “Meatless Wednesday.” The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day, beginning Saturday and ending on Aug. 15. Rizzo makes baked ziti and vegetables. zucchini pizzettes, tomato and chick pea salad, and sambuca cake with fresh fruit topping. Chef Rizzo stresses that the meal can be prepared in about one hour.

‘Shave the Mayor’ to air on Access Channel 5

Sherman Mayor John Patterson gets his head shaved at Sherman Day festivities is the event captured in Destination Chautauqua County’s most recent television production. The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. each day, beginning Saturday and ending on Aug. 15.

Some of the participants giving the mayor his buzz include New York State Senator Cathy Young along with Sherman resident and former county legislator Fred Croscut. Mayor Patterson estimated that he has totaled around $7,500 which will be donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute for research. His wife is a 2-time cancer survivor, who just found out this past Christmas that she is once again free of cancer.

South Dayton Farmers’ Market Saturday

This is National Farmers’ Market Week. The South Dayton Farmers’ Market is celebrating this event on the square Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Children’s Story-time at the Market. “Who Grew My Soup” is a tale of a boy who doesn’t want to eat his vegetable soup and declares he won’t until he knows where it came from. To his surprise, a man in a flying tomato balloon shows up to answer his questions.

If inclement weather, storytime will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Village Library.

Republican picnic today at Point Gratiot

The City of Dunkirk Republican Committee’s annual picnic will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hose 4 Firemen’s pavilion at Point Gratiot Park in Dunkirk.

Among those expected to attend are County Executive Vince Horrigan, Assembly-man Andy Goodell, County Clerk Larry Barmore, Board of Elections Commissioner Brian Abrams and candidate for sheriff, Russell Payne. Representatives from State Sen. Cathy Young’s and Congressman Tom Reed’s offices will be present to answer any questions you might have regarding their positions and concerns for our area.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 2.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.73/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.49/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Fredonia-Pomfret Rec. Dept. to host Field Day Wednesday

On Wednesday, the Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Department will hold its annual Field Day for participants of the summer recreation program at Russell Joy Park from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

All participants will be provided a pizza lunch and beverages and be entertained by a performance from “In Jest” at noon.

All other playgrounds in Pomfret and Fredonia will not be staffed that day.

Washington Park hosts National Night Out this evening

The city of Dunkirk will take part in the annual National Night Out event tonight, with Washington Park hosting the event beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Police, fire department members and other city officials will be present to meet with interested citizens.

“The Lego Movie” will be shown at dusk.

“We also stress that parents do not send their children alone to the events. This program in devised to show the children the importance of the community working together,” Police Chief David Ortolano stated.

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road on Thursday at 10 a.m.

CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare, construction and the security industries, as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma.

Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse. Starting soon,

CJCA will also offer a security and protective services program. It will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted. The Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Im-provement Corporation and Chautauqua County Land Bank Corporation will be hosting a media event on Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m. at 1115 Prendergast Ave. in Jamestown.

The purpose of the event is to showcase both organizations’ rehabilitation programs and to showcase the work completed at 1115 Prendergast Ave. Both organizations wish to increase their exposure within Chautauqua County.

Representatives from both the Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corporation and Chautauqua County Land Bank will be onsite at the property to give a tour of the property, explain their organizations’ roles in the community, and field any questions. Dunkirk Lakefront 5KWalk/Run Saturday

The Dunkirk Lakefront 5KWalk/Run will begin and end at the Dunkirk Clarion Hotel, 30 Lake Shore Drive East, on Saturday.

This 5K starts at 9 a.m. and runs along the shores of Lake Erie. Fees are as follows: for the run: $20 pre-registration, $25 race day registration.

For the walk: $10 registration, free for under 14 with a registered adult. Age groups are 14 & under, 15 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69, 70 to 79 and 80 & above.

Food and drinks will be provided to all registered runners and walkers. Guests may enjoy the festivities and food for $4 for adults and $2 for children.

Chautauqua Music camps accepting

on-site registrations

The Chautauqua Music Camps will be accepting on-site registrants for the 2014 camp, according to Director Peter Lindblom.

Since the mail-in registration date has passed, interested students may apply in-person on the first day, Aug. 11 at 8:30 a.m. It will take place at McKnight Hall on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution. Students can get directions at either the Turner or Main Gate entrance to the grounds.

The Chautauqua Music Camps is open to all band and orchestra instrumentalists who are in at least fifth grade. All information, including schedules, applications, and pictures, is available at the CMC website chautauquamusiccamps.org .

County Antique Equipment Association 40th annual show Aug. 15-17 in Stockton

The Chautauqua County Antique Equipment Association will hold its 40th annual show of antique engines, farm tractors, autos, models, and other mechanical equipment Aug. 15, 16, and 17 on its grounds on Cemetery Road, Stockton.

Show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For a $5 donation, the public can see the equipment in operation and on parade.

There is a flea market, ample free parking, food, and permanent restrooms all on the grounds. There are demonstrations and events throughout the day and special events at posted times.

Children under 14 are admitted free. Senior citizen admission Friday is $3.

Garland Room sets summer hours

The Garland Room at the Barker Museum and Library in Fredonia will be open additional hours through Aug. 28. Hours will be: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday 4 to 8 p.m.

Volunteers will be on hand to help visitors with genealogical research.

Red Cross new lifeguard certification course offered at the Dunkirk school pool

The Red Cross New Lifeguard Certification Course will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The course will cover New Lifeguarding certification, CPR/AED and First Aid. The class size is capped at 10 participants. Participants will need to bring a breathing barrier and should be prepared for classroom instruction and pool instruction. Participants are to meet in the Dunkirk High School Pool foyer area no later than 8 a.m.

Tree cutting near airport

SHERIDAN – Residents near the Chautauqua County Airport in Dunkirk have noticed the removal of a number of trees in the area. County officials note those trees are being removed due to concerns regarding sightlines for landing at one of the runways at the airport.

Fundraiser includes contest

As part of an Aug. 17 benefit for Mikey Edwards, a 26-year-old Dunkirk resident who is battling Stage 4 colon cancer, the Amazing Bar Crawl Race will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the Dunkirk Exempts Firemens Club on Central Avenue.

Teams may consist of up to four members at $20 per members, which includes a meal after the event.

The event will consist of visiting seven bars/clubs to answer a trivia question or riddle about the establishment being visited. Correct answers are worth 250 points and bonus points will be awarded for each team member who has a beverage at each place. Bonus points will also be awarded for arriving back at the Exempts club prior to 2 p.m.

Joining the Exempts Club in the Amazing Bar Crawl Race will be American Legion Post 62, The Fillmore, Bart’s Cove, Spike Dailey’s, The Clarion Hotel and Rookies on the Lake.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

VBS set for Laona U.M.

Vacation Bible School will be held at the Laona U.M. Church from monday to Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme this year is “Discovering Jesus Expedition.” There will be the Bible story, crafts, games and snacks. The program is about discovering Jesus in many ways and in many places. “Souls to Reach” puppet team will help with the program with the main character being Laona Lou. CBRDC August

meeting canceled

Due to summer vacations, training sessions, etc. Chadwick Bay Regional Development Chairman Dan Schrantz has canceled the regularly scheduled August meeting for lack of a quorum.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 11 at the host community of town of Pomfret. The agenda will include action on proposed final draft of the amended by-laws.

An official notice of the next meeting will be announced at a later date.

Westfield blueberry festival today

The Westfield Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market will hold a Blueberry Festival on today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Moore Park, the corner of Main and Portage, Westfield.

It features a blueberry pie contest at 11 a.m. Pies must be in the judging area by 10 a.m., with contestant’s name on the bottom of the pie plate and a completed entry form.

There will be a reading by Amy Stephenson of “Blueberries for Sal” at 11:30 a.m. Other attractions include a demonstration by Tie Dye Master Cynthia Littleton, Tom Troccoli with Blues Renderings from the Gazebo, blueberry baked goods, fresh blueberries and blueberry farm to table.

Forestville Community Family Picnic Aug. 16

The first Forestville Community Family Picnic will be held Aug. 16 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Forestville American Legion on Cedar Street. Residents of all ages from the Forestville School District are invited to attend.

Hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, silverware and paper products will be provided. Residents are asked to bring a dish to pass. No alcohol.

There will be games for all ages and the movie “Frozen” will be aired.
