Registration due today for seminar

A business seminar, “Fifteen Critical Errors Employers Make in Employment Law” will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, at Chautauqua Works, 23 East Third St., 4th Floor Theatre, Jamestown.

Registration and a buffet lunch will be from 12 to 12:30 p.m., followed by the program and questions and answers until 2:30 p.m.

The presenter will be Daniel P. Forsyth, Labor and Employment attorney of Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC. He manages the firm’s Buffalo office.

Benefit for Darlene Alaimo Sunday

A Benefit for Darlene Alaimo is set for Sunday, Nov. 2 from noon until 4 p.m. at the Rotunda Grapevine Railroad, 307 East Main St., Fredonia. School #4 Election Day barbecue

Dunkirk School #4 PTO will be sponsoring its annual Election Day barbecue dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. It will be held at the school cafeteria at 752 Central Ave. The dinner includes 1/4 chicken, pulled pork sandwich, buttered potatoes, coleslaw, roll and butter and will be catered by Weidner’s Barbeque. Audubon Owl Day Saturday

The Audubon Society presents Owl Day, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1600 Riverside Rd., Jamestown. Learn all about these hunters of the night through hands-on activities, crafts and a visit with live owls. Cost: $8. For Friends of the Nature Center and children 3 to 15, $6. The West Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department is holding its Big Truck Fund Raffle to raise money for a new fire truck for the district. The prize is a 2014 Polaris Sportsman 400 H.O. with trail package and trailer, or $3,500 cash. Tickets are $5 for a single ticket, $10 for 3 tickets, or $20 for 10 tickets. The drawing will be held at the annual turkey party on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Fire Hall, located at 4741 Willow Rd. in Dunkirk. The turkey party begins at 7 p.m., and admission to the event is free.

City leaf pickup begins

City of Dunkirk Department of Public Works announces that leaf pickup will commence with a city-wide sweep beginning Monday, Nov. 3.

Only leaves in bags will be picked up in this first sweep. Leaves in barrels or loose at the curb will be picked up in the next sweep. If leaves are left loose at the curb, residents are asked to keep leaves clear of receivers and utility poles and out of the street. If leaves are in bags, residents are asked to leave the bags untied.

Fredonia to begin yard waste pickup Monday

The village of Fredonia will be picking up limbs and yard waste beginning Monday, unless pre-empted for road maintenance operations, in which case the scheduled pick up will resume on the next available day.

Collection will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until every village street has been collected once. Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. Monday morning. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material at this time.

Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place leaves and grass into the street at any time.

Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time. The drop-off area will be available until further notice. Please remember to empty your bags.

Science Center hosts mixer

The Dunkirk and Fredonia Chambers of Commerce are hosting a joint business after hours “mixer” at the State University of New York at Fredonia Science Center on Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Join your chamber friends and see the newest building on the Fredonia campus. The 92,000-square-foot, three-story structure surrounded by a stunning courtyard and connected to Houghton Hall, now adorns the campus Science Quad.

President Virginia Horvath will speak about Fredonia’s revised strategic plan, Start-Up NY and incubator initiatives. The cost is just $5 per person if registered in advance or at the door.

Enjoy appetizers and refreshments provided by the Faculty Student Association. This is a great opportunity to network with your fellow chamber members and learn more about your state university campus.

Silver Creek changes Trick or Treat hours

The village of Silver Creek has shortened its Halloween Trick or Treating hours in anticipation of inclement weather on Friday, Oct. 31. Trick or Treat Hours will now be from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Halloween parade and party with refreshments, costume contest and prizes will be held rain or shine beginning at the Fire Hall on Central Avenue at 5:30 p.m. and ending at The Backline Teen Dance Club.

DHS softball chicken dinner

The Dunkirk High softball program is hosting a chicken dinner on Sunday, Nov. 2 from noon to 3 p.m. at the First Ward Falcon Club, 341 Lake Shore Dr. E., Dunkirk. Chicken will be prepared by Weidner’s and the dinner will include corn, mashed potatoes and gravy and a roll. The cost is $9. Weidman and Cheney to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise

Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Ann Weidman and John Cheney as the guests on Saturday. Weidman and Cheney will discuss the Sea Lion. The show will be hosted by Doc Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2: p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. The guest is subject to change.

Haunted house Thursday, Friday

There will be a Llama Club Haunted House on Thursday and Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at 4939 Rt.. 474, Ashville. The cost is $8 adults, $5 kids. Halloween Party at the Boys & Girls Club Thursday afternoon

Before you go “trick or treating” Friday, local children will have the opportunity to have a “creepy, fun-filled time” Thursday afternoon. The city of Dunkirk Youth Bureau, along with the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County and the United Way, will be hosting a children’s Halloween Party.

The fun begins at 3 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 296 Lake Shore Drive East in the city. Children will be treated to Halloween games, arts and crafts, food and refreshments, trick or treating, and prizes for best costumes.

Fredonia Winter Farmers’ Market begins Nov. 1

The Fredonia Winter Farmers’ Market begins its indoor season on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering an abundance of locally-grown and produced vegetables, fruits, herbs, meats, baked goods, maple syrup, honey, jams and jellies, as well as artisan quality craft goods. The Winter Market is held in the Masonic Forest Lodge located at 321 W. Main St. (Route 20) in Fredonia.

The popular community pancake breakfast will again be sponsored by DeGolier’s Maple Products.

Haunted house holds event for charity Nov. 1

Silver Creek Halloween Parade Friday

The Kiwanis Club of Silver Creek will hold its Halloween Parade and costume contest Friday starting at the Silver Creek Fire Hall on Central Avenue at 5:30 p.m.

The parade ends at The Backline Teen Dance Club on Park Place.

After the parade, there will be a costume contest, cider, donuts and prizes.

There will be first-, second- and third-place prizes for age groups 5 and under, 6 to 12 and 13 and over. Silver Creek Key Club members will be the judges.

Northern Chautauqua Quilting Companions meet Tuesday

The monthly meeting of the Northern Chautauqua Quilting Companions will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m., at the Harvest Chapel, 39 Matteson Road, Fredonia.

There will be a demo and lecture given by Nancy Wilson of Nancy’s Quilt Designs. It will focus on Triangles Made Easy using the Whirlwind Whiz Tools.

The Ahira Hall Memorial Library will host a used book sale through Friday during regular library hours. Rabies immunization clinic Nov. 8

in Jamestown

The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health has an-nounced the final free rabies vaccination clinic for 2014.

The clinic will be held on Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jamestown Fire Training Center on Harrison Street (between Foote Avenue and Windsor Street) in Jamestown. The event is sponsored by the city of Jamestown and Dr. Melisse Schrope will be the attending veterinarian.

Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older. All pets must be on a leash or in a cage and pet owners should bring rabies vaccination records for each animal receiving a shot to ensure proper and effective vaccination.

State public health law requires each dog, cat and domesticated ferret over the age of four months to be vaccinated against rabies and county residents are encouraged to be responsible pet owners by having their pets vaccinated.

Operation Smile Car Wash Sunday

An “Operation Smile” car wash will be held Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mancuso’s Service Center, 242 E. Main St., Fredonia.

The cost of a car wash ranges from $5 to $20 depending on the type of car wash.

Students of the communication disorders and sciences of SUNY Fredonia work with Operation Smile, a national organization that raises money to help children with cleft lip or cleft palate.

Half the proceeds will go to Operation Smile.

Seneca Nation to hold Inside Winter Market on Tuesdays

The Seneca Nation will hold an Inside Winter Market on Tuesdays from Nov. 4 through Nov. 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the William Seneca Build-ing, 12837 Route 438, Irv-ing, by the reception desk.

The market will take off during December and January, but will resume February through May 2015.

Silver Creek Halloween Parade Oct. 31

The Kiwanis Club of Silver Creek will hold its annual Halloween Parade and costume contest on Oct. 31 starting at the Silver Creek Fire Hall on Central Avenue at 5:30 p.m.

The parade ends at The Backline Teen Dance Club on Park Place.

Following the parade there will be a costume contest for all ages, cider, donuts and prizes. There will be first, second and third place prizes for age groups 5 and under, 6 to 12 and 13 and over. Silver Creek Key Club members will be the judges.

The last scheduled brush pickup for the village of Silver Creek will be Mon-day. After that, leaf pickup will commence. Residents are reminded not to put brush or sticks in leaf piles.

County Drug Forum to air on Channel 5

Access Channel 5 will air a three-part series concerning opiate use and abuse with part one airing at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday and ending on Oct. 31.

A day-long community forum that focused on the growing epidemic of opiate use and abuse in the county was held March 12 in Mayville. The purpose of the forum was to bring the community together to have an open conversation in the areas of prevention, education and treatment.

A panel consisting of medical personnel, law enforcement and community officials discussed data on current practices, impacts of drug abuse and barriers that need to be overcome.

During the afternoon segment of the forum, the next steps were developed with regard to increased awareness, prevention, education and treatment.

Part two of the series will be shown at the same times beginning Nov. 1 and ending Nov. 7. The final program of the series will continue beginning Nov. 8 until Nov.14.

Access Channel 5 (QAM channel 21.4 without a converter) is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Har-mony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office will begin enforcing the ban on left turns into M&T and Community banks in the village of Silver Creek. Signs for no left turns are visible.

No skateboarding on Silver Creek sidewalks

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office will begin enforcing no skateboarding on sidewalks in the village of Silver Creek. Mayor Nick Piccolo said this is due to the skateboarders’ lack of respect for pedestrians. The sheriffs will also patrol the park more regularly to deter vandals at the gazebo.

Habitat for Humanity fundraiser Sunday

Chautauqua Area Habitat for Humanity is hosting a fundraiser at The Colony Restaurant on Routes 5 and 20 in Irving on Sunday at 1 p.m. Those attending can watch the Buffalo Bills vs. the New York Jets football game, and enjoy a hot buffet served at halftime, featuring beef on weck, salads, pasta, fruit, pizza and desserts. Beverages will be available at happy hour prices.

To assist with fundraising for the continued construction of Habitat houses, tickets for raffle baskets will also be sold.

Traveler advisory

The New York State Department of Transporta-tion Monday announced that bridge maintenance will begin today on the Route 60 bridge over Canadaway Creek in Pomfret. As a result, Route 60, between Spoden Road and Shumla Road, will have lane closures. Traffic will alternate the use of one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals. This work is expected to last about three weeks.

Puerto Rican traditions celebration Saturday

Gas price falls

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 3.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.44/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 6.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.12/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Robertson raises over $2 million in bid to defeat Reed

Congressional candidate Martha Robertson raised over $515,000 in the third quarter of 2014, bringing her total raised to over $2 million in her race against Congressman Tom Reed in New York’s 23rd District. Her campaign continues to gain momentum in the run up to Nov. 4.

Robertson’s campaign has nearly 7,500 individual donors, 95 percent of whom gave $250 or less.

Fall foliage color report issued

New York state’s fall foliage season is in full swing, with peak colors making their way through the Finger Lakes, Greater Niagara, Thousand Islands-Seaway, Hudson Valley, Central New York and Capital-Saratoga regions this weekend, according to observers for Empire State Development’s I LOVE NEW YORK program.

In the Greater Niagara region, look for peak colors in Niagara County with 50 percent color change and a wide range of bright fall colors. Erie County will also be at peak with 50-60 percent color change and bright red, orange and yellow leaves. Genesee County will be at peak or just past peak this weekend with average shades of red, orange, bronze and burgundy. Wyoming County will be at 75 percent color change and just past peak this weekend with some remaining bright colors.

Foliage is just past peak in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region. In Chautauqua County, spotters reporting from Chautauqua expect 95 percent color change and orange and dark red leaves of average brilliance. Spotters at Allegany State Park in Cattaraugus County also expect 95 percent leaf change and mostly yellow leaves along with some orange leaves of average brilliance.

Gas price falls

Average retail gasoline prices in New York have fallen 2.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.54/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 6,118 gas outlets in New York. This compares with the national average that has fallen 6.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.21/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in New York during the past week, prices Sunday were 12.1 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 12.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 18.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 12.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Feeding Fredonia Challenge starts soon

This communitywide food drive will go from Sunday to Oct. 24. Participating Fredonia businesses and offices will have an orange sign on their door or window indicating that they are receiving donations of food during their regular business hours. The food needed includes: beans, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned meat, dry milk, pasta, rice, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, soup, cereal, coffee, but all items will be welcomed. All food donations will benefit the Fredonia Food Pantry at Fredonia Presbyterian Church, 219 Central Ave. (open the third Saturday of every month).

‘Real Food Fall Favorites’ Sunday

The Chautauqua County Rural Ministry will hold a cooking and nutrition workshop titled, “Real Food Fall Favorites” and presented by Faith Woolson of Arkwright Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Friendly Kitchen on Central Avenue in Dunkirk.

This time of year, Chautauqua County farms are overflowing with homegrown items. Woolson will demonstrate some of her favorite healthy fall recipes.

Candidates to debate on Access Channel 5 Saturday

New York State Assem-bly candidates Barrie Yoch-im (D) and Andrew Goodell (R) will debate on Access Channel 5 at noon on Saturday. The live debate should run for 90 minutes.

The program will re-air at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Oct. 24.

Zombie teens Friday

Fredonia Access Channel 5 will air Friday’s Fredonia High School football game against Olean at the Orange Bowl today and Wednesday at 7 p.m.

City valve repairs to shut down supply

Residents of Roberts Road between Benton and Talcott streets, along with residents on Benton between Roberts Road and Franklin Avenue in the city of Dunkirk have been advised that repairs to two large waterline valves will take place today (Tuesday) and may possibly last until Wednesday.

According to the Department of Public Works, the new valves are required to replace old, non-working valves at the city’s two-million-gallon Benton Street water tank. The upgrade will allow the city to isolate any and all directions of its water distribution system to best protect the new Millennium Parkway and the surrounding residents and industries.

Water pressures will be very low beginning early in the morning and stay that way until later in the afternoon. According to the notice the DPW placed at each house, water systems inside homes are not expected to be usable during this period. Residents were asked to be prepared to be without water service while repairs are being made.

The DPW also thanked residents for their cooperation and patience.

Revitalize Dunkirk to meet Thursday

The monthly meeting of Revitalize Dunkirk will meet in the SUNY Tech Incubator conference room, 214 Central Avenue, Dunkirk at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16.

NCCF’s Service Learning Mini-Grant deadline Friday

Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation is offering the Service Learning Mini-Grants Pro-gram to all schools in northern Chautauqua County.

Funding is available on a competitive basis for projects that promote service learning to middle and high school-level students. Individual grants of up to $500 are available.

Through the Service Learning Mini-Grant Program, NCCF works with educators to bring community service opportunities into the classroom.

Applications for the next round of grants are due to NCCF by Friday.

The committee will review all applications and announce the awards early in November 2014.

NCCF is excited about the Service Learning Mini-Grants Program and hopes that teachers in northern Chautauqua County will participate.

Fall color report

In the Chautauqua-Allegheny region, peak foliage is predicted for Chautauqua County.

Spotters in Chautauqua are calling for 80-90 percent color change with muted to average shades of orange and rust, along with some dark shades of red. In Cattaraugus County, spotters at Allegany State Park predict peak to just past peak colors. Most yellow leaves are turning orange and more red leaves are appearing.

Spotters in Little Valley expect just past peak foliage by weekend with 70 percent color change and yellow, green and brown leaves.

In the Greater Niagara region, Batavia-based spotters in Genesee County are calling for near peak foliage by weekend with 45 percent color change and somewhat muted shades of orange and red.

Erie County will also be near peak with 35-40 percent color change and bright gold and orange leaves, according to spotters in Buffalo. Colors have really emerged over the past week in Wyoming County, according to spotters based in Perry. Look for about 60-65 percent change by the weekend.

Spotters in Niagara Falls in Niagara County expect 40 percent color change and bright red and yellow leaves in midpoint of transition.

Adult Learner information day slated Oct. 29

Jamestown Community College’s North County Center in Dunkirk will host an Adult Learner Open House from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 29.

Traffic safety course scheduled Monday

A traffic safety course will be held Monday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Silver Creek Senior Center. The course provides the students with the insurance reduction certificate for three years and up to four points off of their NYS Driver’s license.

Clothing giveaway Saturday in Forestville

The Chautauqua County Rural Ministry, in partnership with Northern Chau-tauqua Community Founda-tion, Kids In Distress Situ-ations, and Forestville Pan-try will hold a clothing giveaway Saturday at the For-estville Methodist Church on Park Street for Forest-ville residents only. Cloth-ing will be available from 10 a.m. to noon at no cost. Those interested are to bring proof of residency and social security cards for household members who are getting clothing. Cloth-ing sizes are limited, but, there is infant to adult XL. The clothing that is available is new and name brand.

CCRM has partnered with other United Way community partners to distribute the clothing. The donor has requested that any family participating agree to photographing of recipients.

Between Sept. 2 and Oct. 6, the Silver Creek Fire Department responded to 51 calls. These included 16 emergencies, four fires and one accident in the village, 22 emergencies and two accidents in the town of Hanover and mutual aid calls to Sheridan four times and Forestville twice.

October is Fire Prevention Month and Silver Creek Chief James Tytka Jr. asks residents to use safe practices to avoid fires.

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga Thursday at 10 a.m. CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare, construction and security industries, plus high school equivalency classes.

Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as is advanced training for licensed practical nurse. County Tobacco Asset Securitization Corp. board meeting set

The Board of Directors of the Chautauqua Tobacco Asset Securitization Corp. will meet at 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the CTASC meeting room in the main terminal at the Chautauqua County Airport-Jamestown, West Oak Hill Road, in the Town of Ellicott

CTASC was formed by the County of Chautauqua in 2000 to securitize the County’s share of the settlement proceeds of tobacco related litigation involving numerous states and local governments and the tobacco industry. The agenda for the meeting may include authorizing the refinancing of a portion or all of the CTASC bonds to take advantage of current market conditions.

Reed receives NRA endorsement

U.S. Rep. Tom Reed’s campaign has announced the endorsement of the National Rifle Association of America with an “A” rating from the organization’s Political Victory Fund.

Citing legislative accomplishments, the NRA highlighted his support of H.R. 3590, the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act, which will positively impact sportsmen, as well as the SHARE Act, which protects traditional hunting ammunition while opening additional land access for hunting and fishing on land managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Gas price rises

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 0.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.55/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.30/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 15.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 7.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 5.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Airport dedication

Chautauqua County executive Vince Horrigan was on hand for the naming of the Greater Chautauqua Airport Robert H. Jackson Field at a recent ceremony. The dedication will be shown on Access Channel 5 at 1:10 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. beginning Saturday with the last airing on Oct. 17.

Assemblyman Andrew Goodell and Chautauqua County legislator Lisa Vanstrom, representing Senator Cathy Young, were present. Gregory Peterson represented the Robert H. Jackson Center.

A C-43 (DC3) WWII aircraft was on site for tours and was provided courtesy of the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo.

Big Fish Triathlon

to air on Channel 5

Access Channel 5 will air the 40-minute documentary, “Big Fish Tri” at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. beginning Saturday, with the last airing Oct. 17.

The Big Fish Tri is an Olympic-distance triathlon (roughly a one-mile swim, 25-mile bike, 6-mile run).

The event was held June 7 and based at Jamestown’s Camp Onyahsa, in Dewitt-ville.

The Big Fish Tri website observes, “During the race this year, we had the pleasure of having Snowshoe-films, a local film company, do a documentary on the Big Fish Tri. Many participants and volunteers are featured in the film.”

Filmed for Channel 5, the documentary is narrated by race organizers Patty and Bob Gabreski, and Dr. Robert Berke, the race’s medical director. The documentary also features short interviews with first-place winners Dan Pierce (Erie, Pa.) and Sandra Ruhlman of Frewsburg.

The event brought nearly 60 triathletes from western New York and Pennsyl-vania. Local triathletes in-clude Leslie Johnson and Carolyn Snider of Mayville. “A triathlon, especially the Olympic distance, must have all sorts of volunteers: fire, police, rescue boats, timers, divers, kayaks and canoes, motorcycles, ambulances, medics, cooks, set-up and clean-up. We tried to show at least some of the people who made this event so successful, so much fun,” observed Karen Harvey, former Chicago Tribune photo editor and news photographer and a founder of Snowshoefilms.

College & Career Night set for Oct. 21

Jamestown Community College and the Chautauqua County Counselors Associa-tion will host the 38th annual College & Career Night on Oct. 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex on JCC’s Jamestown campus.

The program offers high school students, their parents, and community members the opportunity to gather information about educational institutions and career possibilities.

Representatives from nearly 60 colleges and 80 career areas are expected to attend the event.

The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Political Victory Fund endorses Russell Payne for Chautauqua County Sheriff.

A fellow NYSRPA member, the endorsement is based upon his public opposition to the SAFE Act and commitment to protect Second Amendment civil rights.

“Russell Payne understands that there is nothing good in the so-called SAFE Act and believes it should be repealed,” said NYSRPA President Tom King. “That makes him the clear choice for gun owners this November.”

Traffic Safety Course

in Silver Creek Oct. 13

A traffic safety course will be held on Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Silver Creek Senior Center. The course provides the students with the insurance reduction certificate for three years and up to four points off of their NYS Driver’s license.

A portion of each registration will go to the senior center for its building fund. Plus, the seniors will be selling a light luncheon for students the day of the class to raise additional funds. The city of Dunkirk Fire Department went on 177 runs in September, according to Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom. Included were 142 emergency medical service runs resulting in 50 billed transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. The department also responded to 14 still alarms, 17 box alarms and four mutual aid calls.

The village of Fredonia will begin paving sections of two streets today. Those streets include Lambert Avenue from Newton Street to Day Street and Newton Street from Central Avenue to Lambert Avenue.

Robertson wants televised debate

Martha Robertson issued a statement calling on Congressman Tom Reed to change his mind and join her in a televised debate in Western New York

“Congressman Tom Reed has been on television in Western New York making false negative attacks against me for months now – and I think it’s about time he came out from behind those attacks and had an honest conversation about his record,” she said. “Voters in Western New York – who account for one-third of the 23rd Congressional District -deserve a live, televised debate on a Buffalo station. Why has Congressman Reed refused this opportunity? Why is Tom Reed hiding from voters?”

Robertson said WGRZ-TV in Buffalo has proposed a live, televised debate for both campaigns. She noted that she accepted and Reed declined.

TLC’s bankruptcy

hearing delayed

The scheduled hearing for TLC Health Network in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Buffalo was adjourned Monday until Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.

The hearing was originally to consider the bid from Tony Borrello for vacant land. Questions remained about the number of acres included in the land after the last hearing in August. This matter, along with applications for compensation, will be considered at the hearing.

At a previous meeting it was announced Lake Shore Hospital will receive Interim Access Assurance Funding, which will allow the hospital to operate through March. This is over a year after its original estimate for closing in December 2013.

Hospital officials are trying to determine a sustainable exit strategy from bankruptcy during that time.

Dunkirk Fredonia Breast Cancer Support Group meeting set

The Dunkirk Fredonia Breast Cancer Support Group will meet at the Fredonia Methodist Church on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Marlene Vega, a pioneering psycho-oncologist and third generation breast and skin cancer survivor, will speak on “Survivorship Through Self Empowerment.”

The public is invited to hear her message of strength and joy.

Lighthouse ghost tour tickets on sale

Help support the lighthouse and have an entertaining evening with the Fredonia Ghost Hunters. The last three ghost tours will be held at the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum for this season. Tours will take place on Oct. 18, Oct. 24 and Oct. 25.

Canal Street String Band performs Oct. 17

Folk in Fredonia presents the Canal Street String Band at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House, Village Hall, on Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $15, or $13 for Opera House members.

With three voices, 55 strings and a pair of cow bones, the Canal Street String Band puts a brand new shine on some seriously fun old American music. Enjoy fiddle tunes, sea shanties, cowboy songs, canal ditties, mountain music, western swing and originals. They will be joined for a number or two by members of Westfield High School’s McClurg Street String Band, under the direction of Grammy Award-winning educator Kent Knappenberger.

Silver Creek meetings schedules return

to normal

The summer meeting schedule for the Silver Creek Village Board ended in September. Starting in October the village board will return to its normal meeting schedule of the first and third Mondays at 7 p.m., with a workshop leading immediately into the meeting.

The first meeting will be Oct. 6.

Make a Difference Day” food drive Saturday

The Cassadaga American Legion Auxiliary will collect non-perishable food for the Cassadaga and Sinclairville Food Pantries on Saturday at 9 a.m. This is their annual “Make a Difference Day” food drive and will be helpful to families as the holiday’s grow near. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of Pack 219 will collect the donations while helping their sponsoring organization. Donations may be placed on doorsteps or porches of those who would like to participate, but will not be home. Cash and check donations are also acceptable for the food pantries.

Gifts of Love & Hope Benefit Saturday

A Gifts of Love & Hope Benefit will be held Saturday at Rookies on the Lake, 19 Lake Shore Dr. E., in Dunkirk from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. A $5 donation is requested. Children under 18 are admitted free.

The benefit will be held to provide Christmas presents for the nearly 450 childhood cancer patients of Carly’s Club.

The event will feature pizza and wings by Maria’s, free face painting by Fairy Tale Fun from 3 to 8 p.m., many raffles, two award winning bands: Black Widow (acoustic band) 2 to 5 p.m., DJ Gould 5 to 9 p.m., and Ultra Violet 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Hazards of texting is focus of city event

The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County will host an AT&T #Itcanwait campaign community event at 3 p.m. in the Dunkirk High School Auditorium on Oct. 8.

Texting while driving was estimated to be involved in more than 200,000 vehicle crashes in 2012, often involving injuries and deaths. AT&T is bringing their national campaign to our area and is committed to putting an end to texting and driving.

The campaign is focused on educating the public – especially teens – on the dangers of texting and driving. No text is worth a life It Can Wait.

In conjunction with AT&T campaign staff, the local police department and public officials will give a local perspective on the dangers of texting while driving.

Grant Writing Basics Oct. 7 in Westfield

Grant Seeking Basics is being sponsored by the Northern Chautauqua Com-munity Foundation in conjunction with and held at the Patterson Library, 40 South Portage St., Westfield.

The free two-part training will be held Oct. 7. Part 1, Grant Writing Basics Training, will be presented from 9 to 10:30 a.m. by Sherry Lantz, professional grant writer. Part 2, Foundation Online Data-base Training, is offered from 10:30 to noon by the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System.

The “Foundation Direc-tory Online” database is a fully searchable database including detailed profiles of all active U.S. foundations and an extensive file of grants by the nation’s top funders. Learn how to search for grant sources via the “Foundation Directory On-line” database and increase your grant writing skills.
