Fredonia Central School district Kindergarten registration meeting Thursday

Kindergarten registration is currently on-going at Fredonia Elementary School for the 2019-20 school year. If your child will be 5 before Dec. 1, 2019, please call Fredonia Central School District’s Early Childhood Center at Wheelock Primary School at 679-0002. There will be a parent orientation night for Kindergarten parents this Thursday, May 16, at 6 p.m. in the Wheelock School cafeteria, followed by the PTA meeting at 7 p.m. This meeting is for parents only. The kindergarten screening will take place on Monday, June 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wheelock Primary School. You and your child will need to make an appointment for a specific time on this day, if your child is not currently enrolled in FCSD’s pre-kindergarten program. However, if your child is currently enrolled in pre-kindergarten at FCSD, they will be screened at school as part of their entry to public school, and won’t need to attend this additional screening.

Town of Chautauqua Historical Society news

The Town of Chautauqua Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16 in the Sid Compton room at the old Mayville High School, 2 Academy St. The public is in invited to hear Fletcher Ward, well-known local author, speak about a new book that he is finishing about the area.

Portland Planning Board reschedules meeting

Town of Portland Planning Board has moved its May meeting to Thursday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m., Portland Town Hall, 87 W. Main St. Brocton. This change from its regular meeting night is to accommodate use of the town hall by the Board of Assessment review.

County Health Board to meet Thursday

The Chautauqua County Board of Health will hold its meeting on Thursday, May 16, at 6 p.m. in the HRC Building, 4th Floor Conference Room, 7 N. Erie St. in Mayville. Anyone seeking further information or wishing to attend this meeting should call the Public Health Director’s Office at 753-4590.

Thornton Road to be closed Wednesday

County Road 85 Thornton Road in the town of Cherry Creek, between County Road 62 Erwin Road and Deermont Road, will be closed to all traffic Wednesday, May 15. A detour will not be posted. This closure shall remain in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Active Parenting of Teens

free classes begin Wednesday

The Chautauqua Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council is sponsoring a series of six two-hour parenting classes to be held May 15, 22, 29, June 7, 12, 19 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Mental Health Association, 31 Water St., Door 14, Suite 7, Gateway Center, Jamestown. Active parenting provides skills to achieve a fuller, more satisfying family life and helps teens achieve greater happiness and success. Some of the topics covered in the sessions include: teens and technology (the internet, social networking sites, etc.); the latest in teen drug use prevention (including prescription drugs); teen bullying: how to spot it, how to handle it; special step-family considerations; how brain development affects teen behavior and decision-making; improved discipline and communication; updated teen sexuality issues. Son’s of American Legion Squad 59 news

The Son’s of American Legion Squad 59 will be holding their monthly meeting and election of officers, Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at Post 59, 156 E. Main St., Fredonia.

At the April meeting, a motion for the following nominations to serve as fiscal 2020 officers passed unanimously.

Commander: Rodney Dziduch; 1st Vice Commander: Doug McPherson; 2nd Vice Commander: Dave “Duper” Winchell; Chaplain: David Dengler; Historian: Tom Muldowney; Sargeant-at-Arms: Rich Starks; Finance Manager: Larry Fiorella.
