Dunkirk library, runoff school election today

The Dunkirk City School District will hold a run-off election today for two board candidates. Robert Bankoski and Betsy Ramos tied votes during May 21 school board elections. Today’s vote will determine which candidate will receive a three-year term seat, and a one-year term seat.

Also, Lynnette Hoth is running unopposed to be a Dunkirk Public Library trustee. The seat is for a three-year term.

Voting will be from 12 to 9 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym area.

Sarah Johnson Runaway Slave

June 22 at 2 p.m. in Leon’s 1836 Church, the Leon Historical Society presents “Sarah Johnson Runaway Slave.” Della Moore, director of the Olean African American Cultural Center will tell the story of this remarkable African American woman who escaped slavery to become one of Olean’s leading citizens.

$5 suggested donation.

The church is located on US Route 62 in the center of Leon.

DFT Telephone Company Retirees meeting set for Thursday

The next DFT Telephone Company Retirees meeting will take place Thursday, June 20 at 9 a.m. at Demetri’s on the Lake, 6 Lake Shore Drive W., Dunkirk. All retirees are invited. The get-together always takes place the third Thursday of the month.

Revitalize Dunkirk general meeting set for Thursday

The June meeting of Revitalize Dunkirk will be held on Thursday, June 20, 6:30 p.m., at the Fredonia State University Technology Incubator, 214 Central Ave. in Dunkirk.

Elizabeth Booth, director of Jamestown Community College North County Center and longtime area resident will discuss educational opportunities at JCC including workforce preparedness for this area.

Revitalize Dunkirk’s general meeting agenda will follow. Revitalize Dunkirk, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose members advocate ideas and engage in projects for improved urban living to residents and elected Dunkirk city officials. All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Brocton High School Rotary Interact Club Bottle and Can Drive

The Brocton High School Rotary Interact Club will be having a Bottle and Can Drive on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brocton Bus Garage. Proceeds will support the club’s International Project.

Forestville Fire District Board of Commissioners to meet

The Forestville Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners will conduct its regular monthly meeting Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Forestville Fire Station, located at 18 Chestnut Street, Forestville.

Westfield Quilters’ Guild 26th birthday celebration corrected date

Westfield Quilters’ Guild 26th birthday celebration picnic will take place on Thursday, June 20 at 6 p.m. at the YWCA, 58 S. Portage St., Westfield. New officers will be inducted. Membership dues ($15/year) will be accepted for the new year.

US Coast Guard Aux Boating/Jet Ski Class

The Dunkirk U.S. Coast Guard Aux Flotilla 34 will be teaching an “About Boating Safely” 8 hour class on June 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at 10836 Temple Road, Dunkirk. This beginner boating class will provide knowledge to be a safer boater, kayaker and Jet ski operator and qualifies for New York state as an approved safety class for Jet skis. Pre-registration is recommended by calling Sara at 777-4370 or email at deyoung6–2@yahoo.com. The course costs $40 and includes the study book and other educational materials.
