State Police investigating body found in parking lot

New York State Police are pictured Friday morning on Route 5 in the town of Dunkirk.

The body of a man located in the parking lot of the South Shore Motor Lodge in the town of Dunkirk early this morning is being investigated by the New York State Police.

Capt. Eric Balon confirmed the investigation, which began after Fredonia-based troopers were called around 2:35 a.m. to check the well-being of an individual. Upon arrival, troopers located the man in the parking lot of the Route 5 property.

“The Bureau of Criminal Investigation and NYSP Forensic Identification Unit is actively investigating this incident,” the state police said in a brief news release. “This is an ongoing investigation.”

Shortly before 3 a.m., firefighters were requested at the scene for a person with a possible gunshot wound. A county coroner later responded.

More information will be released when it becomes available.
