FREWSBURG — First responders helped rescue a border collie that partially fell through the ice on a pond Wednesday morning.

Frewsburg firefighters were alerted around 7:45 a.m. to the dog in distress off a property on Dodge Road in the town of Carroll.

According to Nick Niles, a firefighter with the department and the former fire chief, the dog — named Tux — partially fell through the thin ice with its back legs in the water. He said two volunteers with the fire department, Justin Martin and Charles Piazza, donned wet suits and headed toward the pup.

Tux, upon seeing the first responders, managed to get its back legs out of the water and move toward the men.

“He saw them and got excited,” Niles said. “He was able to crawl out to them. The ice was very thin and then they were able to get him.”

Tux was reunited with his owners, who reported he was warm and “back to his normal self.”
