Winter storm warning remains as snow arrives in force

Western New York residents woke up to several inches of snow on Monday while a winter storm warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. The warning is for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming and southern Erie counties.

Kirk Apffel of the National Weather Service’s Buffalo office said the northern portion of Chautauqua County got hit the hardest early on, with both Dunkirk and Silver Creek surpassing a foot of snow by 7:30 a.m. Monday. Meanwhile, in the southern part of the county, Jamestown and Falconer received between 7 and 8 inches Sunday night into Monday, with Apffel saying that the snow in those areas mixed with sleet.

Apffel said snow from a storm system will get lake enhancement, dumping more accumulation into the higher terrain areas.

“It’s going to vary a lot by location, but in general it’ll change over time,” he said. “For the remainder of the day until tonight, the areas that will get the most will be the higher terrain and lake effect areas. The higher terrain should get another 5-10 inches.”

The snow began as a storm system that worked its way up from the Carolina and into eastern Pennsylvania. From there, it came across east central New York and worked its way into western New England. That storm is expected to subside early Tuesday morning, with light lake effect possible into Tuesday as well.
