Increased police presence planned for Institution
There will be an increased police presence for the final two weeks of the Chautauqua Institution season, according to Kevin P. Bruen, superintendent of the New York State Police.
Bruen spoke immediately following state Gov. Kathy Hochul, who hailed the response by security crews, staff, State Police and Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies after internationally known author Salman Rushie was attacked by a 24-year-old New Jersey man before a Friday morning lecture. Hochul made an afternoon stop at the institution on Sunday.
Rushdie continues to recover from the attack. He is off the ventilator and talking, according to his agent Andrew Wylie.
As for the police presence, Bruen said troopers will be working with sheriff’s deputies. “Some of it you will see .. in terms of uniformed troopers, troopers with K-9s,” he said. “A lot of what will happen you won’t see there will be investigators doing background work and threat assessment … to try to get ahead of something.”
The attack continues to be investigated, Bruen said.
Chautauqua’s summer season concludes on Aug. 28.
