Scooters ready to ride in Fredonia

OBSERVER Photos by M.J. Stafford Bird scooters stand ready for use near the Dunkirk Boardwalk Tuesday morning. Fredonia will now have Bird scooter service, after a 3-2 vote of the village Board of Trustees Monday

The Bird scooters have arrived in Fredonia — with significant restrictions on where they can get used.

The scooter-sharing service, which started in the city of Dunkirk in April, became available in the village Thursday. Users download an app, pay a small fee to rent a scooter, then use the app to take a photo when they are done as proof of the vehicle’s return.

The scooters are scattered around Dunkirk, and now Fredonia, with several visible downtown and on Central Avenue Thursday.

However, there are three important places in the village that the scooters can’t be used: Barker Common, Forest Hill Cemetery and SUNY Fredonia.
