Two charged after city search warrant nets drugs, weapon

Items rounded up from Friday's search warrant in Dunkirk.

Two city residents are facing charges after a search warrant at a Maple Avenue residence in Dunkirk led to a find of drugs, cash and a weapon.

Around 6:30 a.m. Friday, the Dunkirk Police Department along with its special response team, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Investigators and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office K-9 executed the warrant at 88 Maple St. in the lower apartment. This was the result of a two-month investigation into narcotics sales out of the residence.

Inside the residence at the time of the execution was 53-year old Curtis Nash and 32-year-old Mercedes Melendez.

As a result of the search investigators found 5.98 grams of fentanyl, 0.10 grams of cocaine, scales and packaging material for narcotics sales, a dagger, a bullet proof vest, a 20-gauge shotgun and $965 in U.S. currency. Both Nash and Melendez were charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminal possession of drug paraphernalia and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Both were transported to the Dunkirk Police Department to be arraigned in the City of Dunkirk Court.

Authorities continue to ask members of the community to call and report suspicious or narcotics related activity within their neighborhoods. For the Dunkirk Police Department Tip line call 716-363-0313, for the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Tip line call either 800-344-8702 or 716-664-2420.
