Tour of Homes planned for Sept. 8 in Dunkirk

Have you heard about the American Foursquare architectural style sometimes called the “Prairie Box” that was popular from the 1890s into the 1930s? Did you know that you could order your house style, it would arrive in a boxcar with a book of directions, pre-cut parts and numbered for self-assembly?

On Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. you will be able to tour five fantastic Dunkirk Homes. Tickets will be $20 with all proceeds benefitting the Dunkirk Historical Museum located at 513 Washington Ave. Tickets may be purchased at the following locations: Dunkirk Free Library at 536 Central Ave., P & G Foods at 411 Central Ave., One Stop Big Rick’s Food Mart & Deli at 327 Lake Shore Drive East and the Dunkirk Historical Museum at 513 Washington Ave. Please note that if you are a member of the Historical Society, you are entitled to a $5 discount, but you must purchase the ticket at the Museum. No tickets will be sold at the houses on the day of the tour.

The Museum is open Mondays and Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. The Museum will be open for ticket purchases from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the day of the tour. Please have your ticket when touring at each house and at St. John’s United Church of Christ at 733 Central Ave. where refreshments will be available between 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

When you are touring you will hear many interesting and unique stories. The Society hopes residents can join the tour. A tour preview will be included in the Sunday OBSERVER with pictures of houses and descriptions. For more information please call the Dunkirk Historical Museum at 366-3797.
