Group plans border declaration protest today

The Chautauqua Cattaraugus Women’s Action Group (CCWAG) will be sponsoring a protest, entitled “Chautauqua County Rapid Response to National Emergency Declaration,” in response to the announcement of a national emergency at the southern border. The protest will take place today at noon, at the gazebo in Barker Commons in downtown Fredonia.

In an email to the OBSERVER, CCWAG co-chair, Tina Rausa, stated the following: “Because we are concerned deeply about the declaration of a national emergency at our southern border issued by the POTUS on Friday, the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Women’s Action Group (CCWAG) will host a protest in conjunction with groups across the nation.”

The declaration of a national emergency has been drawing many’s attention since it was made Friday, meeting mixed reviews from all over the political spectrum. Rausa also noted CCWAG’s take on the nature of the situation at the border. “We feel that the situation at the border is a humanitarian crisis precipitated by instability in Central America, not a national emergency.”

Rausa further elaborated on the border situation with a call to action, demanding accountability for the American people. “We are worried that President Trump has set a dangerous precedent in order to obtain funding for a project, and that in order for future presidents to be held accountable for their emergency declarations, the American people must demand accountability from the current POTUS.”
