Westfield Fire Department summarizes January activity

The Fire Department of Westfield responded to 53 calls for service during the month of January 2019. Of those calls, 39 were for emergency medical services (EMS), with 24 of those calls being within the Village of Westfield and four of them within the Town of Westfield. There were 11 EMS responses to Absolut Care.

There were nine fire calls in January. Five of those calls were in the Village. They included a response to 151 Academy Street for power lines arcing, a CO alarm activation at 28 East Second Street, a CO alarm activation at 17 Clark Street, a tree into a house at 60 Bliss Street, and a CO false alarm at Westfield Memorial Hospital, 189 East Main Street. There were four fire calls in the Town. There was a response for an unknown fire in the area of 7847 Persons Road, a large brush fire near a garage on the Sherman Westfield/Ogden Road, a chimney fire at 7473 Hardenburg Road, and a subject in the water at Barcelona Harbor.

There were five motor vehicle accidents in January. Two of those accidents occurred on the New York State Thruway. The first accident was a two-vehicle accident on the westbound I-90 at mile marker 485. The next accident was a truck rollover on the eastbound I-90 at mile marker 484. The other accidents were a three-car incident at 8523 Route 20, a two-car accident at 47 Clinton Street, and a vehicle versus a semi at 7524 Route 20.

The 53 responses in January was a significant increase from the 37 responses in December.

The Fire Department of Westfield would like to remind everyone who is operating a motor vehicle during winter storm conditions to always turn on wipers and headlights, reduce your speed, and add extra stopping distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
