Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary holds their monthly meeting

The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary held its regular monthly at the Legion Post, Tuesday, May 14. In the absence of President Bev Speelberg and 1st Vice President Bonnie Vari, 2nd Vice President Lauren Sharp opened the meeting in regular fashion with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Preamble, and a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers. Chaplain Paula Pattison gave the opening prayer. Secretary Carol Baker read the previous meeting minutes and Treasurer Sue DeGolier gave the financial report; both were accepted as read. Correspondence was also read by the secretary.

Reports by the committee chairs:

For Empire Girl’s State, Pat Hayward reported that Unit 1280 will be sending Alegria Solares, from Dunkirk, to SUNY Brockport. Every year, from around New York State, high school girls who have completed their junior year are chosen to go to SUNY Brockport in late June, where they spend a week learning about our state’s government and how it is run.

Poppy Chairperson Carol Baker reported she has placed numerous poppy cans around the area. She also had a sign-up sheet for the upcoming “Poppy Week” May 24 through 27, so that the auxiliary can help distribute the Veteran- made poppies at local businesses and at the Gerry, Sinclairville and Cassadaga parades.

Old business:

The Post 1280 American Legion’s 100th birthday celebration held on May 11 went very well. During the award ceremony, Unit 1280 was presented a “Certificate of Appreciation” from Squadron 1280. The Unit members were reminded that Squadron 1280 was again holding its “Cruise Nights” from May through September, on the third Wednesdays of the month. Unit 1280 will hold its bake sales on these evenings, with the proceeds going to benefit Auxiliary Veteran programs. All is set for the rummage and bake sale that is to be held Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Legion hall.

New business:

Sally Lawson asked for help with the hot dogs and such that the auxiliary serves to the masses after the village Memorial Day parade and cemetery program.

After all nominations and discussions, Secretary Carol Baker cast one vote for the 2019-2020 slate of Officers: President Lauren Sharp; 1st Vice President Sally Lawson; 2nd Vice President Pat Hayward; Secretary Carol Baker; Treasurer Sue DeGolier; Sgt.-at-Arms Lynn Moeller; Chaplain Paula Pattison; and Historian Ranee Kaus. Installation of the officers will be at the next meeting, Tuesday, June 11 at 6 p.m. There will be a “dish-to-pass” dinner, meeting, and the installation will be performed by past County President Pat Hayward.

With no further business at hand, Chaplain Pattison gave a closing prayer, and acting President Lauren closed the meeting at 7:55 p.m.

Unit 1280 has nice corn brooms for sale at $10 each; and continues to collect full sheets of coupons, stamps, “Pennies for Hospice,” can tabs for Troop support and “Box Tops for Education.”
