Excessive rain floods creek, basements
OBSERVER Staff Report
Sunday’s heavy rains flooded a number of basements in the city but also caused a local waterway to flood.
At around 3 a.m. a storm arrived, tearing through the region near the Dunkirk Airport, dropping nearly 3 inches of rain within the hour. The resulting deluge caused Hyde Creek, located near Roberts Road, to flood. Dunkirk Director of Public Works Randy Woodbury called the flooding a rare event, which happens about once every 100 years.
According to a notice in the OBSERVER Tuesday the Dunkirk Wastewater Treatment Plant had a combined sewer overflow event for 70 minutes around 3:38 a.m. and another for 30 minutes at 6:10 a.m. The water drained was storm water only, no sewage was discharged.
Woodbury went on to explain that he has no idea as to how many basements flooded in the resulting event and that any claims should be filed with the city clerk’s office.
