Historical meeting to focus on train wreck

MAYVILLE — “A Love Triangle and a Train Wreck,” presented by Chautauqua County Historian Michelle Henry, will be the program for the Thursday, July 18 meeting of the Chautauqua Town Historical Society at 7 p.m. at the Town Building, 2 Academy St.

Henry will unravel the tale of a Prospect Station resident and her two men, which gave rise to the name Fish-Barnes Road. Not so graphic as to violate present norms, the story of these three county residents will offer a fuller understanding of road naming and a unique slant on family construction in 19th century Chautauqua County.

The train wreck refers, of course, to an actual train wreck. A mail train leaving Mayville, carrying one passenger car, jumped the tracks near Prospect Station, with the result of 20 lives lost.

This compelling tale has something for everyone, so please join us for our July meeting!

The Chautauqua Town Historical Society meets regularly on the third Thursday of the month, from April through October, 7 p.m. at the Town Building in Mayville. The public is welcome and encouraged to join us.
