Patterson Library announces July and August events

WESTFIELD — July has really shown its true colors with the heat and humidity. Come cool down at the Patterson Library for July’s jam-packed calendar of events!

Every Monday at 11:15 a.m. through Aug. 5, we have a special program for “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program. These events are open and free to everyone! Every Wednesday through July 31 are our special Summer Reading Story-Time Groups in Patterson Park. We will read, create, learn, laugh and have fun with each other. We have not forgotten our teens, who will have special Teen Nights on Friday, July 12, Friday, July 26 and Friday, Aug. 9 from 7p.m. to 10 p.m. in the lower level of the library.

Of course, all adults need a summer reading escape, as well! Tuesday, July 23 for an adult summer reading group with local Sci-Fi author, Charles Freedom Long, as we delve into the his cosmic worlds of fantasy! Then on Thursday, July 11 we will host an Adult Game Night, Summer Reading Edition, and on Thursday, July 25 we have an Adult Summer Reading Program Mixer planned. Come down, have some snacks, drinks and laughs while you socialize in our beautiful Pergola Garden. All of the above events begin at 6 p.m., and are open and free to the public.

Some other recurring events in July are “Dancing with Your Soul” in the Pergola Garden every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays at 1 p.m. features the Knit & Knatter Club in the Main Reading Room for knitters, crocheters, crafters, quilters or anyone who likes to have a good gab and laugh. Every Thursday from July 11 – Aug. 1, Kay Barlow will be with us in Patterson Park for a special Summer “Music Together” program from 6:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. Call the main desk to register now, as spaces are very limited! Write Now Writer’s Group will meet in the Reference Room on Thursday, July 11, and Thursday, July 25 at 6 p.m.

On Friday, the Octagon Gallery will unveil the works of artist Tom Ferraro at 7 p.m. Also on Friday, come find our table at First Friday by Peaceful Designs as we ramp up for our Books-N-More Galore Sale! The sale will take place from Thursday, July 18 through Saturday, July 20 during normal library business hours. On Wednesday, July 17 we will have an exclusive Books & Brew as a pre-sale event for Patterson Society Members to have first dibs at the merchandise for the Books-N-More Galore Sale! If you would like to join the Patterson Society before the event, please call the front desk right away at 326-2154. We are taking donations for the sale up until Monday, July 15 (this includes board and card games, DVDs, blue-rays, hobby kits, and books galore).

The Patterson Library Board of Trustees will meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. We are very proud to host Winifred Montgomery on Thursday, July 18 at 5 p.m. Winifred will speak about “Hacking the Teenage Brain.” On Tuesday, July 23, the Alzheimer’s Association will be here to present “Healthy Living for Brain & Body” at 5 p.m. July 24 will bring a 6 p.m. survey meeting for a new Mystery Book Club. On July 25, we will host our good friend and author Jill Mattson, who will talk with us about “Healing with Crystals.” Do not forget to come and see the Decho Ensemble make its debut at the Patterson Library on Friday, July 26 at 7 p.m. On July 31 at noon, Culinary Creations meets to discuss local specialty recipes during their regular meeting.

We will also be hosting a library fundraiser on Tuesday, July 30, Tuesday, Aug. 13, and Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. This fundraiser is a paint night, hosted in the Pergola Garden and taught by our very own Art Gallery Curator, Nancy Nixon-Ensign. Patterson Paint with a Pinot in the Pergola will seat up to 15 people for each of these three classes. Tickets at $35 each, and include all supplies, and two complimentary glasses of pinot! Call the main desk to reserve your seat today, and bring a friend to enjoy the fun with you!
