Fredonia Farm Festival Pet Show Saturday

Saturday, Aug. 24 at 11 a.m. in the western side of Barker Common, young people and their best friends will gather for the annual Fredonia Farm Festival Children’s Pet Show. As the name implies, participation is limited to children, but the definition is broad: from babies in arms or strollers to teenagers almost ready to drive a car or go to college. Parents are welcome to assist or help keep peace, but may not compete.

Diversity is evident in the pets presented for judging. Stuffed animals are an easy choice for very young participants, and are always quiet and well-behaved. More adventurous siblings have produced an ark’s worth of animals, including goldfish, snakes, lizards, chickens, goats, birds, rabbits, gerbils, chinchillas and once a performing crab. Dogs and cats remain the majority, and surprises are always hoped for.

Each pet is judged on his individual merit. Unique awards join the time honored beautiful, handsome, oldest, best groomed, best behaved and best educated categories. Judging criteria are much the same for animate and inanimate specimens. A tricks contest run along the lines of a spelling bee and adds excitement to the conclusion of the competition. The winner receives a $5.00 gift certificate to Just Pets in Irving.

As always, the event is provided by Sirius Dog School of Brocton, and conducted by LeeAnne Cogdill. Participation is free and registration is not required. Ms. Cogdill will be available throughout the weekend for demonstrations, answering questions, and is offering a brief, free clicker training lesson to anyone who wishes to bring a dog by the show ring.
