GLOW run spotlights suicide prevention

JAMESTOWN — On Saturday, the fourth annual GLOW Your Mind 5K Run/Walk will take place at 8:30 p.m. at the Northwest Arena, 319 W. Third St. in Jamestown. All of the proceeds raised by the event stay local for suicide prevention efforts in Chautauqua County. This year the glow run will have an ’80s hair metal theme and participants are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite ’80s outrageous fashion.

The glow run is a collaboration of The Community Alliance for Suicide Prevention, Chautauqua Tapestry, and Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene. Chautauqua Striders provides timing and race management for the race. The partnership came out of the groups’ common goal to generate awareness that mental wellness and physical wellness are of equal importance in everyone’s lives.

“Striders is excited to be a community partner with the 5K Glow Run in Jamestown, N.Y.,” said David Reinhardt of Chautauqua Striders. “This fun event is designed for not only the runners, but for families and friends looking for a new fitness opportunity.”

The race begins in front of the Northwest Arena and will follow a mapped out route through Jamestown. The race route is mostly flat through downtown and continues through residential areas. Registration and race packet pick-up will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. inside the Arena. The run and walk will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Registration for the 5K is available online at runsignup.com/Race/Events/NY/Jamestown/GlowYourMind5KRun. You can also find the registration link on the Glow Your Mind 5K Run/Walk 2019 event page on The Community Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s page on Facebook. Registration is available for $25 for anyone who completes an online registration. Registration for participants ages 7 to 18 is $20.

“Last year’s race was very successful and we knew we had to continue growing the event for this year,” said Victoria Patti, Coordinator of The Community Alliance for Suicide Prevention. “The goal is to generate awareness that mental and physical wellness are one in the same while creating awareness for suicide prevention in the area. The course is relatively flat which should make it more accessible to families who would like to walk or run.”

After the race, an After Glow Party managed by Chautauqua Striders Mentoring Program will take place outside of the Arena. The After Glow Party and post-race celebration will begin after the runners and walkers return and the awards are presented to the winning racers. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be available with live music and a photo booth by DJ Xcite Sound.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Businesses or organizations interested in sponsoring the event or anyone who is interested in participating as a volunteer should contact Patti by phone at (716) 753-4519 or by email at PattiV@co.chautauqua.ny.us.
