League of Women Voters hold a workshop on the Census

The LWV will present a workshop on the census on Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will be held at the Jamestown Community College North, 10807 Bennett Road, Dunkirk. The speaker will be a representative from the United States Census Bureau. Come and hear about our upcoming census and ask questions. The cost is $5.

The census helps your community today by determining representation in Congress and allocating Federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities based on population totals and breakdowns by sex, age, race and other factors. Your community benefits the most when the census counts everyone. When you respond to the census, you help your community gets its fair share of the more than $675 billion per year in federal funds spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs. Businesses use census data to decide where to build factories, offices and stores, and this creates jobs. Developers use the census to build new homes and revitalize old neighborhoods. Local governments use the census for public safety and emergency preparedness. Residents use the census to support community initiatives involving legislation, quality-of-life and consumer advocacy.

The census is done every ten years but the census bureau is always at work conducting studies and collecting data. The census is safe and the bureau is striving for an accurate and complete count. Cyber security is monitored 24/7. For this census, residents will be able to respond to the census by paper, phone and internet.
