Historical program on Barcelona fishing industry set
MAYVILLE — Cristie Herbst will present a program on the Barcelona Fishing Industry on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Sid Compton room of the Chautauqua Town Building (old high school), 2 Academy St., Mayville. Sponsored by the Chautauqua Town Historical Society, the program is open to members and interested others.
She is descended from the Jackways, a family who fished commercially from Barcelona for a hundred years spanning four generations. She is president of the Chautauqua County Historical Society, was editor of the Jamestown Post-Journal, and is an insightful local historian.
Barcelona was an active commercial port in the early 19th century, and its commercial fishermen were major providers of white fish to the hotels and restaurants in New York City. She will talk about the history of the Barcelona harbor, Lake Erie, the fish, the boats and the nets.
