LWV Dinner Oct. 9 on Early Care and Learning

The National League of Women Voters will be 100 years old this November! The National League was formed months before the passage of the 19th amendment. The New York State League can be proud that we were the first League of Women Voters. Our state League was formed in 1917 after the women of New York State won the right to vote. Now, as then, our mission is to educate and inform voters and encourage people to vote. We do not support any party or candidate.

The League of Women Voters from its beginning has been a force for early childhood welfare, education, health, and legislation. On Oct. 9, the League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County will hold a dinner followed by a panel discussion of expert early childhood educators to discuss quality child care, early childhood education, and how childcare affects the workforce.

Beth Starks is a full time faculty member at JCC and executive director of the Chautauqua Lake Child Care Center. Starks is also on the governor’s Early Childhood Advisory Council. Susan Marker is the director of the Chautauqua Child Care Council. Beth Mulkin is the executive director of the Campus and Community Children’s Center and previously worked at COI Head Start. Mira Berkley is with QualitystarsNY. It is New York State’s voluntary 5-Star early childhood quality rating and improvement system. Amy Piper is the Principal at Fredonia Central School’s Early Childhood Center at Wheelock.

The meeting will take place at the Clarion Hotel, 30 Lake Shore Drive E., on Oct. 9. There will be a meet and greet at 5:30 p.m., then a dinner at 6 p.m. The panel discussion will follow the dinner. People are welcome to come after the dinner at around 6:45 p.m. Coffee will be available. Reservations must be in for the dinner by Oct. 2. The choices for dinner are 1/4 rosemary roasted chicken or penne alfredo with broccoli. Both include rolls and butter, side salad, potato and vegetable, coffee, tea, lemonade and dessert. The cost is $15. Contact Nicki Schoenl before Oct. 2 at Schoenl@netsync.net or send the reservation to 2716 Route 39, Forestville, N.Y. 14063. Her phone number is 679-1258. All are welcome.
