Child sex abuse prevention training Oct. 25 in Dunkirk

What if every person in our community was trained in child sexual abuse prevention? In the United States alone, one in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.

The CREATE Project is pleased to present Chautauqua County Child Advocacy Program’s (CAP) Stewards of Children, a sexual abuse prevention training. The mission of the Child Advocacy Program is to end child abuse in Chautauqua County. Stewards of Children educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. This training teaches that adults are responsible for the safety of children.

Ideal for parents, grandparents, and any adults who care about children, as well as staff and volunteers of organizations that serve children and adolescents, the training will be held at the Steger Apartments Community Room, 15 N. Main St., Dunkirk on Friday, Oct. 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The CREATE Project and CAP offer this event free of charge. A donation of $10 to $20 to CAP is suggested. Pre-registration is recommended. Contact the CREATE Project at 680-0266 for more information and to pre-register.

Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and all concerned adults who want to keep kids safe, will value Stewards of Children training. Groups and individuals that want to make a difference in their community by educating adults about how to protect children will also benefit. Organizations and corporations that need to respond to insurance requirements or continuing education needs regarding child protection are also welcome to participate in the training.

The training will include topics such as: how bystanders can protect children from boundary violations and sexual abuse; healthy touch for children and youth; and how to talk with children about safety from sexual abuse. Also discussed will be the commercial sexual exploitation of children. Participants will not only increase their awareness, but will also learn new skills to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. They will also be empowered to help change organizational policies and procedures.

The CREATE Project is an arts-based community intervention designed to help our community become free of child trauma, abuse and neglect, and to become a place where children can grow to their highest potential. At the present time, the CREATE Project currently serves the Dunkirk-Fredonia community. Currently the CREATE Project offers arts, drama, and music After-School Programs; a Music Therapy series, and intergenerational Community Share Sessions in arts, music, and creative sewing for adults and their children.
