First Riding for Laurel event hits starting line on Nov. 2

The first Riding for Laurel event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 2 at Chautauqua Health & Fitness at 1170 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

Participants can choose from four sessions — all for one hour — starting at 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m. There is an entry fee of $25. If you raise $50 in pledges, the entry fee will be waived. Raise $160 and receive a gift card to a store of your choice.

There is a free T-shirt with every registration and free drawings for every session.

Wayne and Elaine Hotelling created Laurel Run in honor of their oldest daughter, Laurel, who had Down syndrome. The event is a celebration of people with special needs and a reminder that they can accomplish great things. If given the chance, Laurel herself enjoyed a full, active life until her death in 2017 at age 54. One of her favorite things to do was ride her three-wheeled cycle.

Not everyone is able to participate in the Laurel Memorial Run & Walk, so Chautauqua Health & Fitness created the inaugural Riding for Laurel. For this event, people will take a 50-minute spin class riding a stationary bike under the guidance and encouragement of spin-cycling instructors.

Proceeds from Riding for Laurel will support people with disabilities through Filling the Gap and The Resource Center. Registration can take place through Chautauqua Health & Fitness or online at www.laurel-run.com.
