Valley Historical Society hears presentation on historical speeches

Submitted Photo SUNY Fredonia’s Amanda Shepp spoke to the Valley Historical Society.

CASSADAGA — Members and guests of the Valley Historical Society met at the Cassadaga American Legion for a presentation on historical speeches. Larry Barmore, society president, welcomed all to the gathering, and led the group in the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Bonnie Larkin read the minutes of the previous meeting, and the financial report of the society was given by treasurer John Sipos. Secretary Larkin and Diane K. Shaw are the curators of the museum. The museum is located in the heart of Sinclairville and is currently closed for the winter season. The historical society dates back some 42 years when the late John and Ruth Smith, and Rev. John Rough saw a need to preserve the history of the Cassadaga Valley and formed the historical society. The museum was purchased one year later.

Guest speaker for the evening was introduced by Charles Sylvester. Amanda Shepp, from the State University College at Fredonia, was the guest speaker. Shepp is the librarian of historical collections, and specializes in historical collections and archives. On July 12, 1896, Robert Ingersoll spoke to a very large group of people in Lily Dale. lngersoll was a forward thinker at the time, and a progressive speaker. The speech is in the book of Robert Burns, “Pen Pictures.” Shepp said the book is rare, and there are only a few known copies. The book is a highly localized example of channeled spirit writing. Excerpts for the book were read by Shepp. A very interesting presentation was enjoyed by all.

Nominations of officers for 2020 took place, and elections will take place in December. More nominations will be accepted then, prior to the election. Following the presentation, refreshments were served by John and Susan Sipos. For more information on the Valley Historical Society, write to P.O. Box 1045, Sinclairville, NY 14782. New members are always welcome.
