Debris, deliberation in Silver Creek

SILVER CREEK — A village resident wants some action regarding storm debris on the lakeside section of Front Street.

“I asked at the last board meeting if this could be taken care of, but it was only pushed into a big pile. If another storm comes and spreads the debris around, it could be a hazard,” said Bill Kuppel at this week’s village board meeting.

Mayor Jeffrey Hornburg questioned the resident about the debris, since he thought that it had been taken care of after the last meeting. He asked where exactly the debris is and what it includes. Kuppel said the debris is made up of a railing, branches, chairs, leaves, and even stairs from houses. The mayor agreed to send the Department of Public Works to the location to clean it up as soon as possible.

¯ The board tabled the hiring of a certified engineer to help in upgrading and applying for a renewal of the current Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers permit to maintain the mouth of Silver Creek at the discharge into Lake Erie. This permit needs to be upgraded because the company maintaining the lakefront needs a more detailed map and drawing of the area, which needs to be done by a certified engineer.

Hornburg suggested Andy Johnson of EcoStrategies Engineering and Surveying, PLLC of Falconer to do the job. He was not quoted a price and does not personally know the engineer. Trustees Marv Cummings and Warren Kelly voiced concern over the lack of a cost figure.

¯ Silver Creek is getting ready for the holidays. The board announced the Christmas in the Park celebration will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. At the event, which will be held near the Backline building downtown, Santa will be arriving via fire truck. The Christmas decorations in the village are soon to be put up, which include the fence around the park, a tree to be placed in the middle of the park and the nativity scene.
