CCRM addresses NYS plastic bag ban

Submitted Photo From left to right: Mary Ann Kluck, CCRM volunteer, Executive Director Kathleen G Peterson and SUNY Intern Emma Atherall. Emma’s major is Public Relations and a minor in Public Health, which fits neatly into Rural Ministry’s programs.

Through its emergency services, Chautauqua County Rural Ministry provides bags of food, bread, clothes and household items to those in need. As of March 1, 2020, NYS Ban on Plastic Bag usage had CCRM staff concerned about how people will be able to transport their items of basic needs. Last month, a large donation of over 3,000 t-shirts were donated through Delivering Good Project and CCRM needed to creatively find usage for them all. Bridget Majka, Director of Programs researched ways to use t-shirts and found out how to turn a cotton t-shirt into a carry bag. Volunteers, staff, SUNY interns and students from Northern Chautauqua Catholic School have made over 100 bags thus far, states Executive Director Kathleen G Peterson. The bags will be available to those CCRM serves, as well as people in the community who might need them. CCRM is a United Way of Northern Chautauqua County Community Partner.
