SHERIDAN — The Town Board held a Memorial Day service to honor the soldiers who gave their lives in war. The service was abbreviated this year because of the pandemic.

“This year is the 152nd anniversary of Memorial Day,” said Walker. “It was on May 5, 1868, that General John Alexander Logan issued the now famous order that May 30 of that year be set aside decorating the graves of our comrades who had died in defense of our nation in the Civil War.”

There were a few different speakers at the service, including a prayer, reading of the Gettysburg Address, a poem, and the reading of the honor roll of deceased Sheridan veterans. The VFW Post 6390 and the Color Guard and Rifle Squad of Forestville American Legion Post 953 saluted the fallen with three rounds fired and Taps played.

The board hopes next year they will be able to return to their normal extended service as they usually do from year to year.
