SUNY Fredonia announces reopening plan

The State University of New York at Fredonia is preparing for the return of students, faculty and staff for the Fall 2020 semester, following SUNY’s approval of Fredonia’s reopening plan.

“Western New York has just entered Phase 4 reopening for the regional economy, and even better, SUNY has just certified our campus’ Fall 2020 Reopening Plan,” said Interim President Dennis L. Hefner in an email to the campus community. “We will now begin to implement our plan, realizing changing circumstances could dictate some further adjustments.”

A steering committee and three subcommittees are working on finer details of the plan and will provide guidance to campus as the information evolves. “Please remember the situation is still fluid, and may change,” Interim President Hefner said. “Our top priority is providing for the safety of everyone.”

Some of the highlights include:

¯ Move-in for residence halls will begin on Saturday, August 15 with the classes beginning on Monday, August 24.

¯ The semester will go straight through with no breaks, other than weekends.

¯ In-person classes will end on Friday, November 20, with most students moving out of the residence halls that weekend.

¯ The last week of instruction will be completed remotely during the week of November 30-December 4, with finals remotely completed by Friday, December 11.

¯ Approximately 30% of campus classes will be conducted via distance education to reduce the density in academic buildings and in individual classrooms.

¯ Facial coverings will be required in all campus buildings, and for all in-person classes (except where curriculum, such as music, dictates otherwise). All faculty, staff, and students must abide by the facial covering requirements, which protect the safety of everyone.

¯ Students with pre-existing health conditions are encouraged to utilize the extensive selection of Fall 2020 distance education offerings, which can be taken from home, or in any off-campus location.

¯ International students who experience difficulties arranging travel back to the United States are also encouraged to take fall classes via distance education.
