MDA Fill the Boot campaign goes virtual this year

Labor Day weekend is a familiar time around Western New York.

People have an extra day off from work, families prepare to send their kids back to school and firefighters line the busy intersections of the area to collect money for Fill the Boot, the campaign to raise money for muscular dystrophy and ALS.

This year, however, everything changed with COVID-19 and Fill the Boot was canceled nationwide.

Fill the Boot is now virtual like many other things, however, due to this very little money has been raised.

“I think for all of New York state so far there is like $4,500 raised total, we do that in an afternoon,” firefighter Tim Winters said. “Contributions are way down this year.”

Winters shared the link to the Fredonia Fire Departments local drive and all that’s been raised so far is $125 in the last week.

Dunkirk on the other hand has done better, raising $975 in a month since they started theirs.

“We’ve had very generous donations from a few families that allowed us to get to that mark,” firefighter Devin Freitas said. “I don’t think we would have gotten there if it wasn’t for them”
