Cuomo announces $357M in pavement renewal projects

Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced over $300 million in new pavement renewal projects that will benefit roadways in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties.

The statewide projects — worth $357 million in total — will incorporate the use of environmentally conscious construction techniques such as warm-mix asphalt and cold in place asphalt recycling that can be applied at significantly lower temperatures that will reduce fuel consumption and decrease the production of associated greenhouse gas emission during construction.

In Chautauqua County, $1.8 million will be spent to resurface Route 20 from the Pennsylvania state line to the village of Westfield in the towns of Ripley and Westfield. Meanwhile neighboring Cattaraugus County will receive $13.8 million to resurface Interstate 86 from exit 17 to exit 20 in the towns of Cold Spring, Red House and Salamanca and in the city of Salamanca. Additionally $961,000 will be spent to resurface Route 16 from the bridge over Elton Creek at Church Street to the Erie County line in the village of Delevan and the town of Yorkshire.

“New York continues to lead the nation in demonstrating that infrastructure investments supporting economic growth can be balanced with protecting our precious environmental and natural resources,” Cuomo said in a statement. “These investments are laying the foundation for sustained growth in tourism and business development while enhancing the resilience of the supporting infrastructure.”

“Under Governor Cuomo’s leadership, New York State is building back better and in a sustainable manner that will support regional economic development for decades to come,” state Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said. “New York is leading the way by incorporating climate friendly strategies into our historic investments in resilient transportation infrastructure.”

“Investment in our infrastructure directly impacts our local economies across New York State, providing a safe pathway for the transportation of goods and services that so many rely on,” said state Sen. Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation. “Strong transportation networks are critical to attracting new jobs and businesses, and as we build back from the COVID-19 pandemic, this funding for environmentally conscious repairs will be an essential component to New York’s recovery.”

“I thank the Governor for this important announcement,” Assemblyman William B. Magnarelli, D-Syracuse, chair of the Assembly Committee on Transportation, said. “Improving and maintaining our infrastructure will be important as New York’s economy continues to recover from the pandemic. These projects will provide jobs and ensure our businesses can keep commerce moving safely and efficiently.”
