Council approves resolution for fireworks

Get ready for fire and fury in the sky over Lake Erie again this Independence Day.

After a one-year, pandemic-induced absence, the city of Dunkirk plans to bring back its fireworks show. The Common Council approved a contract with Benedict, Pa., fireworks providers Starfire Corp. on Tuesday. The contract is for $30,000. Starfire has provided the fireworks in recent years and will do so this year for the same $30,000 cost it did in 2019.

The rain date will be July 5 for what the resolution to pass the contract called a show “of equal quality and length … to that of 2019, and with some enhancements thereto.”

The city now has to make a $15,000 deposit for the show, with the rest due 15 days before the event. Councilman Paul VanDenVouver said, “I just want to make sure our residents know… if this is canceled due to COVID-19, we get our deposit back.”
