Heavy rain Friday brought numerous reports of flooded roads and properties in the southern portion of Chautauqua County.

And with rain in the forecast for Saturday, local officials are warning the public that some roads and bridges may be temporarily closed due to flooding.

Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel and county Department of Public Facilities director Brad Bentley, in a news release, asked motorists to exercise caution over the next 24 to 48 hours due to the potential for water-clogged roads and bridges.

“County roads have seen an increase in flooded roads with the persistent and continued rains in July, which is causing an unusual amount of damage to our infrastructure,” Bentley said. “Expect temporary road and bridge closures as we address issues as they arise.”

Added Wendel: “The county is experiencing flooding in areas that are not typical for this time of year. Motorists are reminded to not drive through flooded roads and streets and should be on the lookout for unexpected temporary road closures.”

Reports of flooding began around 2:30 p.m. Friday on Route 60 in the town of Gerry. Other areas experiencing flooding included the towns of Ellery, Busti and Ellington.

Meanwhile, residents of the Shore Acres area in Bemus Point were asked to evacuate due to rising water. “Another strong storm is approaching and water levels from floods are expected to increase,” an alert said.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo issued a flash flood watch that will remain in place through late Saturday night.
