Community bike rides roll again Saturday

Bicyclists will have plenty to do Saturday, with two community rides planned in Dunkirk.

The third installment of the Central Connection Bicycle Rides linking Fredonia and Dunkirk is in the morning.

Starting at 1 p.m., the Resource Center will host the Dunkirk Pedal Party with organizational help from Slow Roll Buffalo, the initiative that originally inspired the Central Connection rides.

Both of the rides, which are not affiliated with each other, are intended to be leisurely affairs for people of all ages and abilities, with no racing allowed.

The Dunkirk Pedal Party ride will start and end at The Resource Center’s facility at 186 Lake Shore Drive West.

The approximately 10-mile route will visit several city neighborhoods, Lake Front Boulevard and Point Gratiot. Slow Roll Buffalo will provide volunteers to help oversee the ride.

There will be two stops: at the Resource Center’s Eagle Street home base and the center’s Mary Andrews Home on East Chestnut Street. Brief presentations at the sites will educate riders about their historical significance.

“We began looking into this last year, after a conversation with a person in our Dunkirk self-advocacy group (Jennifer Myers) who rides her bike a lot,” said Steve Waterson, The Resource Center’s community relations director.

“I thought I would be a good idea to have a Slow Roll in Dunkirk, all inclusive, including people with disabilities,” Myers said. “I thought it would be a good idea to get them in on it, too.”

Waterson said they had already planned on Sept. 18 for the ride before learning about the Central Connection events. “Fortunately, the ride times don’t conflict with each other,” he said. “Who knows — maybe people will want to do both rides!”

The Resource Center is holding a party for the Pedal Party cyclists when they return to the Lake Shore Drive West facility.

A food truck, Foodies Sweets-N-Eats, will be there and DJ Matt Bogosian will provide music.

The Dunkirk Pedal Party is also getting support from the city of Dunkirk, Filling the Gap, Inc. and the Population Health Collaborative.
