Angola theater, village hall gets Restore NY grant
A closed movie theater and village hall, both in Angola, are among the latest approved projects from Restore New York grant funds.
According to a press release from Gov. Kathy Hochul, the village of Angola received $1.27 million for its Main Street Revitalization Project. The proposed Main Street Revitalization Project will rehabilitate the 5,860 square-foot Angola Theater at 72 N. Main St., which has been vacant since 2020, to restore economic and cultural vibrancy to the community. Additionally, the Village will rehabilitate the former Town Hall at 42 N. Main St. which has been vacant for 30 years for the purpose of creating five affordable residential units and two first-floor retail units.
“These Restore New York grants will help to reimagine downtowns across our state and transform vacant, blighted and underutilized buildings into vibrant community anchors,” Hochul said in statement Monday.
More than $112.9 million has been awarded to 70 projects through the Restore New York Communities Initiative. Restore New York supports municipal revitalization efforts across the state, helping to remove blight, reinvigorate downtowns and generate economic opportunity in communities statewide. The program, administered by Empire State Development, is designed to help local governments revitalize their communities and encourage commercial investment, improve the local housing stock, put properties back on the tax rolls and increase the local tax base.
There were no projects listed in this announcement for Chautauqua or Cattaraugus counties.
Other Western New York projects awarded were in Lockport, Buffalo, North Tonawanda, Cheektowaga and Erie County, totaling $12.8 million.
