White Cane Awareness Day held in village

The 2025 White Cane Safety Awareness Day Walk was well attended by clients and supporters.

CBA Vision Rehabilitation Services brought staff, clients, and community supporters together at Barker Commons Park for the organization’s fourth annual White Cane Awareness Day Walk. This year marked the first time the event was held in Fredonia.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the white cane, an important symbol of independence for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson attended the event and issued an official proclamation declaring October 15 as White Cane Awareness Day in Fredonia. After the proclamation, attendees participated in a group walk around the park, crossing the main streets of Fredonia. Following the walk, everyone enjoyed refreshments donated by Farm Fresh Bakery of Jamestown, as well as treats brought by family members of clients.

“We were fortunate once again this year with beautiful weather, and we had a fantastic turnout,” said Megan Maynard, Executive Director of CBA Vision Rehabilitation Services. “We were thrilled with the level of support. The attendance from friends of CBA, board members, clients, their guide dogs, and local Lions Club members was truly wonderful. I hope we can continue to organize more events like this to bring our clients together and raise community awareness.”

CBA Vision Rehabilitation Services provides services to individuals who are legally blind in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. White Cane Awareness Day, first recognized nationally in 1964, honors the independence and mobility that the white cane provides to individuals who are blind. The day also serves to remind motorists and the public about the traffic safety laws that protect white cane users.
