Alleged crossbow murderer arraigned in court
A Jamestown man has officially been indicted in a murder earlier this year in the city.
Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt announced that David Nelson was arraigned Monday in Chautauqua County Court by Judge David W. Foley on a one-count indictment charging him with second-degree murder, arising from the death of 62-year-old Michael Jaeckle of Jamestown. Nelson is accused of intentionally causing the death of Jaeckle by shooting him in the neck with a crossbow on Sept. 12.
At the arraignment, the court held Nelson on $1 million cash, or alternatively $2 million property bond and $3 million cash partially secured at 10%.
Schmidt thanked the Jamestown Police Department for their swift response to the incident and their work on this case.
Jamestown Police Department Lieutenant Adam McKinley said, “I commend the work of the initial responding patrol supervisors and officers, whose diligent actions set the foundation for this case. The combined efforts of the Jamestown Police Detective Bureau, the Chautauqua County Forensic Investigation Team, and the District Attorney’s Office were instrumental in this case. We will continue working hard to prepare for trial, to ensure that justice is served for Mr. Jaeckle, his family, and friends.”
A preliminary hearing took place in Jamestown City Court on Nov. 5, where two police officers with the Jamestown Police Department testified – Sgt. Daniel Ove rend and Sgt. Christopher Draudt.
On Sept. 12, Draudt went to a hotel on West Third Street where Nelson was in the lobby holding a crossbow in one hand and a machete in the other following a 911 call, allegedly made by Nelson himself.
Draudt said he recognized Nelson from previous interactions. Nelson had apparently told him there were people in his apartment with guns.
Nelson gave the officers his apartment address of 314 W. Fourth St.
During the preliminary hearing, officers said when they entered the apartment, the only person there was Jaeckle, who was deceased with a crossbow bolt lodged in his neck.
Nelson had been taken to UPMC Hospital in Jamestown. While there, he was interviewed by Overend and others.
Nelson allegedly told investigators that he shot Jaeckle with a crossbow, giving different variations of why, including that there were other people outside that wanted to kill him and there was talk of suicide.
Nelson also said that he felt threatened because Jaeckle may have had a pocketknife but none was found.
Overend said Nelson had apparently been hospitalized for mental health issues, which is where he and Jaeckle met.
Nelson also had allegedly been released from the hospital the day before Jaeckle’s death.
Nelson is due back in county court on Jan. 5 for a Discovery Conference.
