A 91-year-old male who was airlifted via Starflight on Thursday died after colliding with a Chevy truck on Route 5 in the town of Pomfret near Van Buren Road.

Emergency responders from local agencies were called to the scene before 2 p.m. for a two-car accident between a maroon Lincoln and a black Chevy truck. Investigation by New York State Police revealed that the maroon sedan, operated by Donald R. Thering, of Fredonia, was traveling northbound when he stopped at Van Buren Road.

After stopping, he then proceeded through the intersection across Route 5 and failed to yield to the truck, driven by 29-year-old Matthew T. Coyle, of Fredonia, who was traveling westbound on Route 5. The truck impacted the passenger side of Thering’s vehicle, causing severe damage. Thering was transported via Starflight to the hospital, where he later died.

A portion of Route 5 was closed off as rescue crews from Brocton, Portland and Fredonia were on scene.
