Officers from Fredonia, Dunkirk, the FBI and the county sheriff’s department were on Eagle Street Wednesday morning.

A brief standoff Saturday morning in the village of Fredonia had area law-enforcement officers on alert around 9 a.m.

The Fredonia Police Department had received information that Walter S. Duprey was staying at 112 Eagle St., an apartment house in the village. Duprey possessed outstanding felony arrest warrants issued by the Dunkirk City Court, for robbery, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Officers arrived at the location, and learned through an investigation that Duprey was inside the residence, and refused to exit the two-story apartment. An investigation also revealed that accessible firearms were contained in the residence.

At the location this morning, officers could be seen gathered around the house and standing at attention, holding a gun, near the residence.

After several attempts to communicate with Duprey, he barricaded himself on the second floor of the residence. Over the next hour, three occupants in the residence were released from the residence through negotiations. Shortly thereafter Duprey surrendered to the Fredonia Police Department. He was immediately turned over to members of the city of Dunkirk Police.

Duprey’s name in recent months has been associated with the Rebecca Ruiz trial in Mayville. Ruiz was found innocent of second-degree murder and manslaughter. However, during the trial, she stressed the violence and fear in the relationship between her and Walter “Waldo” Duprey.

The Fredonia Police were assisted by the city of Dunkirk Police, and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. The Sheriff’s Office K9 units also assisted with the investigation.
