City kicks off Grand Prix in style

OBSERVER Photo by Mary Heyl Competitors in this weekend’s Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix Power Boat Races greeted city residents as they traveled down Central Avenue toward the pier on Friday night.

Cloudy skies that threatened rain did nothing to dissuade the crowds that gathered along Central Avenue on Friday for the community parade that kicked off this weekend’s Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix Power Boat Racing. The parade began at 5 p.m. on Sixth Street and traveled down Central Avenue to the pier, where most of the action will be taking place this weekend.

Mayor Willie Rosas led the parade and was followed by Dunkirk Fire Department trucks and emergency vehicles. Nearly a dozen powerboats and their crews took part in the parade, waving to the crowds, throwing candy and showing off their sleek vessels that will soon be competing on Lake Erie.

Several community organizations and Grand Prix sponsors took part in the parade, as well. The Army National Guard, the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County, DFT Communications, Dunkirk Senior High Marching Band and students from Northern Chautauqua Catholic School marched or rode on floats in between the participating power boats. Several motorcyclists and 10 classic cars and trucks participated in the parade, as well.

The half hour parade ended at the pier, and was followed by live music that continued throughout the evening. Today’s festivities include boat testing from noon to 4 p.m., an air show at 1:15 p.m. and live music on the pier beginning at 5 p.m. For more information, including a full schedule of the weekend’s events, visit dunkirktoday.com.
