Donations sought following fire

BROCTON — After a fire destroyed their home the morning after Christmas, the Brigham family has begun to accept donations to rebuild their lives after the tragedy that took the lives of their three dogs and one cat and burned all of their possessions.

A Facebook fundraiser was established by a friend of Season Brigham, the mother and Erie BOCES special education teacher who resided at 8299 Route 380 with her four children: two 4-year-old twins, an 11-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son.

As of Friday, more than $3,800 has been raised for the family who lost their home due to a faulty pipe connecting to their wood stove that caught fire and required the assistance of several fire departments to put out Wednesday morning. Dozens of friends, family members and strangers have already donated or are planning to donate to the cause either online through Facebook’s “Season Brigham and family” fundraiser or through mail or in-person at the Inner Lakes Federal Credit Union in Westfield.

The Brigham family is also accepting donations of clothes and toys to make up for the burned Christmas presents and to help prepare them for the future. Brigham’s oldest son Aiden wears men’s size 10 or 10.5 shoes, 30 by 32 jeans and adult medium shirts.

Oldest daughter Nataleigh wears women’s size 8 or 8.5 shoes, size 6 jeans and adult small or youth 18/20 shirts. The male twin Harmon wears size 5/6 clothes, and the female twin Eleanor wears size 7/8 clothes. Harmon wears children’s size 11 or 12 shoes, and Eleanor wears children’s size 12 or adult size 1 shoes.

Brigham and her four children are determined to bounce back despite the tragedy of losing their house and four pets. As animal lovers, Brigham said her children asked about their pets’ well-being first when she returned to her mother’s house to tell them about the fire.

“We would’ve been gone too if I hadn’t let my kids stay at my mom’s,” Brigham said. “(Losing the pets) shows you that we did lose family members. (My children) were in shock. Everybody’s devastated. We lost everything.”

Volunteer firefighters from Brocton, Portland, Stockton, Cassadaga, Fredonia, Westfield and East and West Dunkirk were able to put out the fire, but only a burned shell of their house remained. The fire began around 5 a.m. and reignited at approximately 9 a.m.

“I’m very appreciative for everybody who’s done anything,” Brigham said. “I want to thank everyone (who) has helped me and my kids out thus far. I am overwhelmed by the love and generosity of people.”

Brigham and her children continue to remember their dogs Steele, Naka and Cena and their cat Choka.

The fundraiser can be found at facebook.com/donate/1932378383526396/10218900155881564/. Those interested in donating can also write checks to Season Brigham as a donation at Inner Lakes Federal Credit Union in Westfield.

“Thank you for anything you can do,” said Heidi Jo Trippy, Brigham’s friend and organizer of both fundraisers.
