Steamburg man dies in Gerry accident

GERRY — Paul R. Newell, 43, of Steamburg has been identified as the person killed in a one-vehicle accident on Gerry-Ellington Road on Friday morning.

The accident was reported around 11:23 a.m. Friday 2571 Gerry-Ellington Road, Gerry, with first responders on the scene by 11:29 a.m. Agencies responding include the Gerry and Sinclairville volunteer fire departments, Chautauqua County EMS and a coroner.

According to a police report, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find a single motor vehicle that had been involved in the accident and two victims. Paul R. Newell, the passenger in the vehicle, had been partially ejected and was subsequently pronounced deceased. James A. Newell, 41, of Steamburg, was driving and had to be extricated from the wreckage and was taken by Gerry Volunteer Fire Department to a nearby landing zone and was subsequently airlifted by Medevac to UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie for treatment of serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing and charges will be pending based on the outcome of the investigation by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Chautauqua County Accident Reconstruction Team, District Attorney’s Office, Gerry Volunteer Fire Department, Sinclairville Volunteer Fire Department, County Coroner’s Office, and the Chautauqua County Fly-car program.
