Brocton and Portland may share code enforcer

BROCTON — Village and Portland town officials are seriously considering sharing a full time zoning and code enforcement officer.

The Portland Town Board has proposed the sharing agreement, and Brocton’s Board of Trustees sounded enthusiastic about it at their monthly meeting Wednesday.

“You cannot continue to have part-time people, because they leave,” said Mayor Richard Frost. Both Brocton and Portland have their own part-time code enforcers now.

The trustees liked the idea of sharing a full-timer. “I’m in favor of doing that,” said Bryan Woleben. “I’m 100% for it,” said Carol Horlacher.

Frost added, “He or she may stay a week steady in Portland. That doesn’t mean ignoring Brocton, there’s just more work in Portland … it might go the other way two weeks later.”

It’s unclear at this point whether Brocton or Portland officials would do the hiring, but Frost, Woleben and Horclacher agreed that both municipalities should contribute to the full-timer’s pay.

Brocton’s current chief code enforcer is Alan Gustafson. The Board of Trustees re-appointed Signe Rominger as deputy code enforcer Wednesday. Rominger is listed as Portland’s code enforcer on its town website.
