Chautauqua Center eyes $5M facility

A health-care building project appears to be on the horizon in the coming months for the city of Dunkirk.

The Chautauqua Center, which currently has locations at 314 and 319 Central Ave., as well as a pediatric site at 1134 Central Ave., has received $3 million in funding from New York state to build a new facility. The total cost of the project is expected to be about $5 million.

Michael Pease, chief executive officer of The Chautauqua Center, said the plan is to remain in downtown Dunkirk but have one facility for all its services. About six sites are currently being considered.

“We’re hoping to put in an offer in the next month,” Pease said, noting all services with the exception of the pediatrics offered at 1134 Central Ave. will be at the future location. The new facility also will offer The Chautauqua Center a chance to expand its services, possibly chiropractic and ophthalmology.

One of the sites The Chautauqua Center looked at was Brooks Memorial Hospital, which is located at Sixth Street and Central Avenue. “That was a possibility, but the timeline won’t allow us to move in there,” Pease said.

Brooks currently has plans to build a new location in Fredonia off Route 20 near Route 60, but little has happened regarding the move in recent months.

Pease indicated the amount of work to the current Brooks site would be cost prohibitive to his organization, which also is in the process of completing a new site at 107 Institute St. in Jamestown.

The Chautauqua Center is a federally qualified health center providing family medicine and wellness outpatient services to individuals of all ages. They accept a wide range of insurances and have a sliding scale available for self pay.

Pease said the Dunkirk location currently serves 4,200 active patients and expects that number to grow to 6,000 with the new building.
