Four young men from Dunkirk Civil Air Patrol Squadron NY-351 recently participated in Civil Air Patrol Encampment at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia, NY. Encampment, an annual, week-long event that brings more than 150 first time cadets together from all across the state, inspires cadets to develop leadership skills, learn about aviation, space and technology, commit to a habit of regular exercise, and live the Core Values of Civil Air Patrol. Training emphasizes leadership, character, fitness and STEM and provides opportunities for career exploration.

Cadets Kaden Brushaber, Benjamin LaGrow, Aiden MacGregor, and Sebastian Pencek, all Airmen 1st Class, proudly represented their local squadron last week. The graduation ceremony was highlighted by the honoring of several veterans of World War II, who served in the D-Day invasion, the Iwo Jima landing, the Italian front, and other theaters. Cadets had the opportunity to fly Cessna aircraft, travel from Scotia to Niagara Falls in a C-17 Globemaster, fly in a Blackhawk helicopter and a C-130, and see F-15s land and take off during Encampment.

Airman 1st Class MacGregor was inspired by his first sergeant to learn more about para jump school. Not only do para jumpers jump out of planes and helicopters, “they also help people. I would love to do that,” he said. Aiden said he enjoyed the physical training, drill and discipline of Encampment, and is hoping to go to Hawk Mountain, a Ranger school, next.

Boys and girls ages 13-17 are welcome to join the Dunkirk CAP Squadron. Commander Przybysz can be reached at 366-2967 for more information.
