Fredonia fire hall project still unclear

OBSERVER Photo by M.J. Stafford Mayor Athanasia Landis and the Fredonia Village Board discuss the Fredonia Fire Hall at Monday’s meeting.

Fredonia’s fire hall renovation project is on hold due to a lack of bids and village officials spent part of Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting trying to figure out what to do.

“I just wanted to have like a general direction as to where you want to go to fix these problems,” Mayor Athanasia Landis said to open the discussion.

Trustee Kara Christina referenced a similar discussion at a recent meeting, when officials floated doing enough work to keep the building stable during the winter, then re-bidding the project in the spring.

“I think we should re-bid it in December,” said Village Treasurer Jim Sedota. “We should separate contracts between roofing and siding.”

He explained that he had heard a siding contractor was interested in the project, but they didn’t want to take on the responsibility of roofing. Sedota said requiring two separate contracts, rather than going for one general contractor, would probably increase bids.

Landis said the bid requests were not written correctly to begin with. “I think jobs like this, we should be doing the advertising,” Sedota said.

As far as stabilizing the building, Sedota said, “I spoke to the chief (Ryan Walker) and he felt he could button down everything for the winter.” Walker was not present for the discussion, which several officials lamented — Landis said he was “feeling under the weather.”

Ending the discussion, Landis said she would talk to both Wendel Companies the construction management firm handling the bids, and Walker, “and see where we want to go.”
