Arkwright sees fiscal returns on windmills

Arkwright seems to finally be seeing returns on the windmills that were erected in 2018.

According to the budget proposed at the Octover board meeting, there were decreases and increases in several areas, but overall the town tax is dropping 5.6% and the fire tax at 58.2% with the overarching total tax in Arkwright dropping by 12.3%.

Some areas that changed included a $45,000 decrease in contractual appropriations and a $1,000 decrease in unallocated insurance. There was a 4.1% increase in woker’s comp and a 2% increase in medical insurance, but overall, the general appropriations are down by 11.7%. Where did the revenues come from to make up for this? According to town officials, it’s from the wind farm, whose output is garnering an additional $50,000 this year in just one area.

“The windmills are fully taxable, under the New York State Assessment Rules. There is a tax break for the land, but not for the windmills,” Supervisor Fred Norton shared. “The windmills are fully assessed.”

General repairs saw a 2% increase as did machinery and personnel in the highway appropriations account. State retirement had an 8.3% increase and social security, a 2% increase.

The budget is expected to be passed this month.
