Pressed on time

OBSERVER Photos by Gregory Bacon Crews were back to work Friday on the roundabout construction at the intersection of Routes 60 and 20 in Fredonia.

The snowfall may be slowing work, but it has not stopped construction on the roundabout this year in Fredonia.

According to Joseph Morrissey with the state Department of Transportation, they still have work planned before the end of the month for the intersection at Routes 60 and 20.

“Our goal is to finish placing the new curb adjacent to the Wendy’s restaurant on the south side of Route 20 and the east side of Route 60, and then place asphalt base and binder courses in front of this curb,” he said in an email to the OBSERVER. “After that work is done, the project will shut down for the winter, with the traffic signal remaining in place. Two lanes on Route 60 north of Route 20 will be reestablished prior to the winter shutdown, as was the case prior to the start of the project.”

Morrissey noted they’re hoping to finish this work up in the next couple weeks.

Work on the intersection began in May, although the major work started in the late fall. The summer, crews focused on drainage and moving utility poles.

The state’s goal is to finish the work by the summer of 2020.

The entire project is expected to cost nearly $3.7 million.

The completed project will be a two-lane roundabout and will also include new sidewalks and curb ramps, which comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Raised medians will be constructed near the approaches on Route 60 north and Route 20 east and west to eliminate left-hand turns into oncoming traffic — something the DOT says will curb a high crash rate near the intersection.
