Athenex’s general construction is about complete, with the city of Dunkirk and its surrounding areas excited to see the long awaited employer begin production at its new Western New York facility.

“We moved to the area to construct the Athenex project and quickly found a community that was very welcoming and supportive of our team and efforts, building a world class facility in your community,” Lee Ogle, project director for Exyte U.S. shared in a letter to the OBSERVER. “Over the next 8-12 weeks the majority of our team will be moving on and we’re looking forward to Athenex occupying the building in early February, 2020.”

The full letter is on page A5 in today’s edition.

“I’m surprised at how quick the main structure was finished,” Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas said. “There are other contractors that need to come in to work on the interior, drywalling and such.”

Rosas added that as far as he understands, the employing of new hires will take place in phases. “It’s going to be a big deal for the area, with that many high paying jobs coming in,” Rosas responded. “I’m very pleased to hear the good news and I thank Lee (Ogle) and his wife for being such active residents while they were here in the city. We built a good relationship while they were here.”

The project is going to bring many jobs to the area and no doubt will have a huge impact on the city, the town and the county.

“We’re working in tandem with the city on this project and we are happy that it’s in the town,” Town of Dunkirk Supervisor Richard Purol stated. “The fire departments have been through the facility and we’re waiting to see what happens.”

According to Purol the building is a state facility, so the town will not be seeing tax revenue from it at least at this time. Right now the town and city are looking to start small as Athenex will begin inhabiting the building.

The area will definitely reap the benefits of the world class facility and all it will offer foundationally and economically to the area.
