Benefit to support Dunkirk fire victim

Just five days into the new year, Dunkirk resident Cindy McGrath was forced from her Mullet Street home when a fire started in her living room and spread throughout the house. Though Dunkirk Fire Department members were able to save the home, it is not yet habitable, and McGrath and her pets have been displaced ever since.

According to friend and fellow VFW John T. Murray Post No. 1017 Auxiliary member Rhonda Daminski, McGrath and her pets have been provided with temporary housing in a mobile home in Brocton. “She was hospitalized for smoke inhalation for two days at Erie County Medical Center,” Daminski explained. “She’s been on disability, which has now been extended.”

McGrath is a familiar face to many, as she is a kitchen staff member at Brooks Memorial Hospital and a long-time member of VFW Auxiliary Post 1017 in Dunkirk. “We’re planning a benefit for her to help get her back on her feet,” Daminski explained. On Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., the VFW will host a fundraiser dinner on McGrath’s behalf at Post 1017, 113 Deer St. in Dunkirk.

“Cindy is in need of almost everything, from clothing, to furniture, to food, and financial assistance,” said Daminski. “It’s also the veterinarian bill that’s a big challenge: $1,300.”

Goulash dinner tickets will be available for $10 at the door, but can also be purchased in advance at Post 1017 (open daily at noon). Tickets are also available from Auxiliary members Lori Carrn, Daminski and Vera Joy. Non-monetary donations, such as clothing and household goods, will also be gratefully received at the benefit.

The benefit includes a basket raffle, and basket donations of all varieties can be brought to the post any time this week. “Cindy has been a friend of our for many years,” said Daminski. “She’s a wonderful lady, and it’s just so sad that she’s had to go through this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.”

Those who have questions can call VFW Post 1017 at 366-6484 any time after noon.
